SoYou TV Interview

November 1, 2009

Another interview from when Tokio Hotel were in France. This one was filmed earlier this month. It’s a great interview about the songs and music, not a lot of the usual fluff about falling in love. :p

Tokio Hotel – German group may be stronger than the Beatles in terms of number of fans completely hysterical that travels with him to each of his appearances – is back with their third album Humanoid! And it’s an event! Do not forget that Tokio Hotel, whose average age group is 20 years, no more, has already completed the Parc des Princes has single-handedly in June 2008! Nothing less!

Tokio Hotel was in Paris last week to present this brand new album in the bins since the beginning of October. Our reporter SoYouTV has met Bill (the singer) and Tom (guitarist), twins from the German formation. The two brothers took the opportunity to tell us about the evolution of the group, including their involvement in the group Tom and Bill are in fact co-produced the album, a way for them to remain masters of their work.

Translation by summerlove, please credit her when you use it.

Here’s the translation…I tried my best! French is my third language (and it’s getting rusty) so excuse me for any mistakes! :)

How are you?
Bill: We’re pretty well. We’ve been standing for a long time, but we’re always in a good mood.

The new Tokio Hotel?
Bill: The new album is a bit more electronic and there are a lot of other influences, but it’s something that came naturally during the production. It wasn’t planned or anticipated; it came like that. And I think it’s a normal evolution. It’s still tokio hotel, but the sound has changed a little.

And your French?
Bill: I love you (je t’aime)
Tom: I’m fine (ça va bien)… (sorry, I didn’t understand very well what else he and Georg said)

Your lyrics?
Bill: The lyrics aren’t 100% autobiographic!
Tom: After all, it depends on what’s called a true autobiography. But even when we speak of things that we’ve experienced, it’s linked to what we described in our songs. These are issues that affect us, that we are not insensitive to. And even if it’s something we’ve not lived, we have thought and felt about it. So they are autobiographical!

A very visual city?
Bill: This album is as we wanted it to be. There’s electronic sounds, and we experimented with many others too. And image, we immediately thought of robots! Same for our video. So you see me on a motorcycle in an urban city when writing an album, as the main display. It’s already known what our clips and everything will look like. And when you write, you put all these pieces together one after the other and the end result is the long awaited album.

Stage in France for 2010?
Tom: Nothing is concrete yet. We haven’t finalized all the plans. But what is sure is that in the beginning 2010, we’ll go on tour. Certainly there won’t be any cars or motorcycles in shows! But it will really keep in mind the CD during this tour. After all, whether we will be on stage in France? We will.

The Show?
Bill: It’s simple, the show will be like the album… MAGNIFICENT!

The Acoustic concerts?
Tom: We really love big concerts! That’s why we love having a LOT of fans to fill large venues because we love playing in a packed concert. We need this connection with the public, but maybe one day we will make an acoustic tour. It’d be fun!

Bill & Tom Co-Producers
Bill: We like to control everything and do all ourselves. Whether it’s the cover, we love to ‘touch’ everything. It’s our group and we do not want someone else to decide for us. We had also wanted to participate a little more in the development of the CD. We dove in and really worked on the production of the album. It was very important to us to have a say in the mix among other things. So that’s why we wanted to co-produce “Humanoid”. We discovered a new facet of our business and I think that in the future it will continue like that.

Yama vs Geisterfahrer
Bill: We all thought it’d be nice to have a feminine voice on this track and vary the rest of the album. Her voice was perfect for “Geisterfahrer” and I thought it was a good idea because she has the voice of an angel! even a little fragile and I thought it fitted perfectly with the song. She brings the emotion in this song. Her tone is opposed to what “Geisterfahrer” has, what he thinks, what he sees, what he says and what he sings.

Tokio Hotel Goom Radio

Success is our Drug

October 5, 2009

Tokio Hotel’s Bill Kaulitz has an interview in Metro France. According to eien, who found this and translated it, (please credit her when used), this is online now and Metro is probably one of the most read newspapers as it is free and distributed every morning everywhere. We hope it will be in the print version and to obtain a scan.

Enjoy!

The Germans of Tokio Hotel are back with the album Humanoid Meeting with the androgynous singer Bill Kaulitz.

This is your second album also released in English …
What is different this time is that we release it in both languages simultaneously, and we will continue to do so in the future.

You prefer singing in English or in German?
English and German are part of us but I could not say whether I prefer one or the other. In fact, when we were touring the United States the last time we sung in German too. We sung more in English, yes, but the fans also want our songs in German. Moreover, they sing with us!

The Scorpions were huge in the U.S. …
(Laughter.) It’s a legend, that group, with titles that have become legendary. It is not our kind of music! For Rammstein same thing. They are great on stage, but well, it’s not our cup of tea.

You worked with a lot of people. Has this contributed to a more mature sound?
In fact, for us it was a development, but this is not something we did on purpose. It didn’t think: “Now we will create a new sound.” We did not write for a long time, so we wanted to see what kind of music each of us wanted to do. And eventually that was the result. We also thought we’d try to do something other than guitar, bass and drums. That’s how it happens but it’s not something that was done knowingly.

There are a lot of synthetizers. Some sounds remind us of the 80s …
True. However, each of us listens to a different music, but on the other hand, during the whole phase of production of the album, we do not listen to other music. We are so focused on ourselves and what we want to make that there are hardly any influence. We just tried to see how we could expand the sound of Tokio Hotel. And even during production, we tried lots of things to see what we wanted to do. We did what we felt inside of us and that’s the result.

What do you think about when you listen to the songs from your starting?
My voice has obviously changed because it became deeper, but on the other hand, it is true that we are older but not necessarily more mature!(the text says more like adults)

Oh yeah? You lead a life of rock’n'roll debauchery?
I don’t get what you mean by that! (Laughter.) When we’re on tour, there is no alcohol. Anyway, we need our nights. But if we go out, we really party with all parts of what is rock’n'roll!

In the song “World Behind My Wall,” you sing: “One day I’ll be ready to go see the world behind my wall.” It is quite intriguing …

In fact, we wrote the songs together with our producers, of course, but that title is extremely personal. It’s not about being confined in the sense of a prison, but being surrounded by walls all the time. This is what happens to us since five years.

Is it part of the drawbacks to your success, being unable go out without being harassed by the fans?
Yes, absolutely. We would love to get out a bit, see the outside world. But we also like success. Before, when we went out in other countries, we walked around without bodyguards, walked normally on the street. Now this is not possible anymore. But we want people to know and listen to our music, so success becomes like a drug.

What would you do if you were not musicians?
We would surely be unemployed musicians and we would go to nightclubs and from a bar to another to play a little. And on the side, we would do some porn movies to earn more money!

Why? Had Somebody already proposed roles to you?
No. Not directly. Nobody’s going to propose that to me because it is not very realistic that I participate in the film.

There was not a project for a film of Tokio Hotel? But I think it was not porn!
(Laughter.) Evidently, it has already been proposed, not to make a porn movie but as a group. Personally, I have great respect for actors, but one should know to not overdo things. Musicians shouldn’t be actors and actors shouldn’t be musicians. Better not mix everything. But the idea is not excluded if one day we are offered the right role.

Do your comrades feel a little neglected at times compared to all the attention you get?
It was never an issue between us. But it is a recurring theme at this time because the thing is that I’m all alone on the cover of the new album. It will disrupt the world for sure. But it has never been an issue for us because each group has a singer and ours happens to be me.

finished! Man I’m late for school! I apologise for the typos and any mistake.Sorry guys!

Interview SFR Music

September 20, 2009

Thank you to oo_fifi_oo and emynona for the translation. Please credit them when you share this translation?

Q: Is a new album synonym of stress for you?
Bill: We feel less pressure now because it’s our 4th album, and so we have nothing more to prove. This album is released in many countries at the same time. There are two versions, an English one, a German one. It’s both very exciting and stressful for us because it’s the first time. But we try to relax and focus on our first goal, which is to make good music and that people keep enjoying what we’re doing.

Q: The desire of a musical change?
Bill: For this album, we wanted to produce something different and evolve musically. We performed the same songs for one year and it’s true that even we were bored to hear and interpret them. We had to move on. We wanted a different sound from the eternal guitar-bass-drums. So we tried lots of different things. But what’s really new in this album is that Tom and I co-produced it.
Tom: We went to the studio and we tried new things, original sounds for us. There has not been some precise influences. We wanted to make a new album and it’s true that the sound is different. But it still is TH.

Q: Was this album inspired by science fiction?
Bill: To be honest, we’re not science fiction fans. We simply thought that the word “humanoid” fitted us and that it described quite well our lives and what we are. So, we had chosen this title for the album before we even started to write the songs.

Bill: Success is not something you get used to. Sure we’re really happy to see our fans waiting for us outside. We worked hard and for quite a long time on this album. And when we arrived, two days ago, we were delighted to see that our fans were there in front of the hotel. (not true apparently, according to Fifi)

Mina (TH fan): I think I would need to write a book to describe all I like about them. They are real I think they are… That’s a band that wasn’t casted, they knew each others for a long time as kids and who realized a dream together without expecting it. They’re real, the fact that they’re my age, what they sing and say fits with a certain period of my life… They evolved like I did in fact. So after a while, it’s sentimental, we get attached, and it’s a little like our favorite (ndlt: chouchou in French, hard to translate).

Bill: Fans are really important for us in every country. They always have something special. But it’s true that apart from Germany, we played most of our shows in France.
Tom: French fans always welcome us greatly.

Bill: They are here right when we arrive and it’s true that they have always supported us.

We are not afraid of anything…

September 14, 2009

Wow, there is a really long interview in Dream-Up France. Thanks to the hard hard work of Eien, we have part one translated. Please check back here because we will update the rest when we have it. And maybe you will find the scans appealing in the meantime. There are some contradicting statements in here from earlier interviews, so, as always, read it and have fun with it!

PART I
Tokio Hotel : “We are not afraid of anything.”

DU:What were you up to during this long absence?
Tom: Until the end of last year, we were touring here and there in the world. After that we came back in Germany to prepare this fourth album in the studio.Everything went very fast even if the public feels like they waited for us for so long.

DU: Did you get the chance to go on vacation this summer?
Georg: Unfortunately no. Since the release of our first album Schrei (So laut du kannst) in June 2006, we had little rest. Between the promotion, the Tours, and the recording in studios, the planning is quite full since three years now.
Bill: We spend our time travelling, so when we havea break of one or two days we go back in Germany to those who are close to us. It’s in Magdeburg, a tiny village where we grew up that we recharge our batteries.

DU: Aren’t you afraid that certain fans took their distance from you?
Bill: We aren’t afraid of anything. Tokio Hotel fans are always present and many are still following us today. It’s for that public that we were absent for so long, so that we could offer them worthy of their support.
Georg: On the other hand, we cannot force people to like us. If our new album seduces the public, everything’s going to be fine…

DU: In which state of mind are you carrying the release of this fourth opus,Humanoid?
Tom: The pressure is the same as the previous albums. It was always stressing to release a new disc.We ar torn between the fear of deceiving and the irrepressible urge to seduce.
Bill: And to make it worse, the media took hold of the news.Everywhere, people talk about the release of this new album like it was a big event. Now,more than ever , people are waiting for us around the corner…

DU: Why did you name the album,Humanoid?
Gustav: Humanoid is a pretty word to show how human we are, behind the surrealist , almost irrational aspect, of our success. That title opens a new chapter in the band’s history.

DU: In which context did you do the recording?
Bill: This opus is the result of a meticulous work. We recorded in the biggest studios in Germany, but also in the USA; precisely in Miami and L.A
Tom: We collaborated with big names in production such as Guy Chambers who worked with Robbie Williams, Kylie Minogue. Red One known for his collaboration with Lady Gaga and Desmond Child who worked with Aerosmith ,Jovi, Ricky Martin, Kelly Clarckson and the Rasmus.

DU: Is that the reflection (mirror image?)of the new musical style of Tokio Hotel?
Bill: Without claiming to revolution the music codes, Humanoid describes perfectly the musical mood the band is in. A sound that is more rock and mature. The electro influence is also more noticeable than before.
Tom: From a musical point of view, there is a lot of bass, drums and guitar. But the instrument that dominates is the synthesizer. It bring an new cosmic dimension inspired by science-fiction.

DU: Talking about that, what sense do you give your album cover?
Georg: We wanted that cover to reflect all he songs. That’s why we took Bill’s face, imagined as a guinea pig of a futuristic experimentation. He appears totally robotic , metallic and cold.Three years of thinking were necessary to the elaboration of that visual image.
Bill: Even if the role of being the band’s leader was given to me through time, it made me ill at ease to appear alone on the cover. I am not truing to put myself in the spotlight or eclipse Tom ,Gustav and Georg. But in the end, I am satisfied with the visual result. The band is expressing itself through me…

Goom Interview

September 8, 2009

Hi there, as previously reported, Tokio Hotel did an interview with Goom Radio in France on 9/4. And here it is in a couple of versions! Enjoy. This is a very very good interview.

Translation at the bottom for you to read while you watch or listen or…

INTERVIEW DE TOKIO HOTEL PAR GIA SUR JUST HITS BY GOOM RADIO
by goomradio

Gia: Today I receive Bill, Tom, Georg and Gustav! Hi guys! You are back with a new track Automatic but mostly a new album expected on the 2th of October available in two versions: English and German. Why in English? Is it to conquer other countries?Because we remember in 2008 you won best band in the USA.

Bill(translated by Gia): We decided to make this album in English; we dont know anymore if it was last year or two years ago. From now on, our albums will be in both languages and that has nothing to do with the MTV awards, its more that we want more people to understand our lyrics.

Gia: Do you feel the same way when you sing in English and in German? Since English is not your mother tongue so we can imagine that it is more difficult for you.

Bill: At first we had to get used to it, especially me and since Im a perfectionist I really wanted it to sound right, with English not being our mother tongue. But now, I am equally at ease when I sing in both languages.I dont even know anymore which one I prefer.

Gia: Around this album, there were quite the rumors.Especially about the collaborations: Guy Chambers(and etcThe same list in every interviews they get these last days o_O.)Are these rumors true?

Bill: In reality, these are only rumors. We worked with the same producers who worked with us before. Its true that we recorded in the USA. We wont say much about it for now.

Gia: The hit we know now is Automatic/Automatisch out on the 2nd of October. Tell us about the song and the clip filmed in the South African desert.

Bill: We already choose that title to represent the album because we all thought that it also represented perfectly HUMANOID.It was a track recorded in a very short time. Concerning the clip, we had the chance to shoot in South Africa. It was awesome, we had lots of fun.

Gia: The boys even gave their permission to broadcast the clip. Now I feel like asking you more personal questions.Because I know the goomers listening to us right now are dying to know everything about you. Bill and Tom, you just turned 20, how does it feel to have such an huge and an accomplished career already.Do you live your youth despite everything?

Bill: We caught up with our youth. We rented an amusement park with our family and friends, Georg and Gustav. It was our childhood dream.

Gia: Its true that they did a lot more of things than the average youngsters of their age. They work a lot but they love it. I was wondering what did Georg and Gustav offer you for your birthday?

Tom: Normaly we have a rule : we dont give each other gifts. But for the first time, Georg skipped that rule and offered us a video game. We dont give gifts because the best gift is love.

Gia: How do you see yourselves in twenty years?

Tom: We hope that everything will be fine and that they will always be present. Maybe well have long prolonged holidays but we hope to always play on stage and produce awesome albums.

Gia: In what aspect is this album different from the last one?Is it more pop-electro?

Bill: Its true that its a bit pop and electro. Its a new sound but its definitely Tokio Hotel. We are waiting anxiously for the fans opinion.

Gia: That is also our concern. Do you think the public will be at the rendez-vous?You were gone for two years after all and two years is a lot for the fans.

Bill: We hope that it will be the same public, that the fans stay loyal to us.French fans are still under our charms and we also hope to gain new fans.In the end the fans grew up with us anyway.

Gia: Why did you stop during two years? Were you too young?Afraid of the success maybe?

Bill: It was not a break because last year we went on tour and then we began to work directly on HUMANOID. For the USA it was not felt like a break, but in France it was felt like a huge one. In reality, they didnt even go on vacation.

Gia: Youre back Tokio Hotel. After such a long absence how do you feel about this comeback?

Bill: We are not under the impression that it is a comeback since we didnt feel like we were gone.

Gia: Tokio Hotel has always been present and they are ready. Goom radio fans are asking if you planed concerts already for 2010?

Bill: We are in the process of planning everything. No precise dates yet but one thing is sure: well come in Paris in the beginning of 2010

Gia: Last question for all the fans who listen to us, Do you guys have a facebook and a myspace too?

TH: We dont have facebook, but we do have a myspace.
