From 2006: Gustav from Tokio Hotel likes it LOUD! A rare interview with Gustav Schäfer! This is Bravo #26 – Germany

“I Like it Loud!” Gustav from Tokio Hotel

Tokio Hotel drummer Gustav (17) rarely opens up in interviews – (he) rather let’s his band mates do the talking. Now he’s making an exception for BRAVO – and very openly talks about his life

Gustav’s role models are heavy bands like Metallica, Motörhead and System Of A Down

Band picture: Tom (16), Bill (16), Gustav (17) and Georg (19) during their legendary appearance at Amsterdam’s rock club Paradiso in the beginning of June
Gustav with headphones picture: Heavy, loud sounds are blaring from his headphones most of the times
Gustav with fans picture: Gustav and his fans: they love him because he’s so natural and down-to-earth

“I was the funny one with the big gob!”
“I’ve only really been in love twice.” “I’ve started to drum underneath our dining table.”

By Gustav
The earliest memory in my life is from a fall! I’ve been riding a tricycle and a wheel suddenly broke off in a bend. I fell over and cried because the tricycle was totally broken. All of this happened in Magdeburg where I grew up – in a single-family house with a little garden. I’ve got one sister – she’s older. She only lives 500 metres away from us. We often talk on the phone. Sometimes I drop by at her place in the afternoon. Then we’ll drink tea and chat for a bit. She’s also been given me flirting advice before. Once I really liked a girl that was always standing at the bus stop with me in the mornings. My sister then told me what would be the best way for me to get to know her. However, it didn’t work out. I just didn’t have the guts to talk to her. Currently I also don’t have a girlfriend. Just because there’s no time for it. I’ve only really been in love twice anyway. Unfortunately one of them already had a boyfriend – and even though I had been together with the other one, it was only a long-distance relationship. She lived 13 kilometres away from me. You couldn’t just drive there without a car. So we broke it off eventually. With girls I pay a lot of attention to the eyes and the face.

However, the hair colour absolutely doesn’t matter to me. I was always the funny one with the big gob in school. Now I’m a bit quieter but sometimes I turn it up on the tour bus. I’ve already been playing drums back then (in school). My musical career started underneath our dining table – during the evening meal. Back then my father was listening to t a lot of Eric Clapton, Phil Collins and Led Zeppelin. He filled the whole house with their sounds. And so I started to drum along. My father immediately registered me when a music school opened in our neighbourhood then. Of course there were also times when I couldn’t be bothered with practising anymore. However, nowadays I’m glad I went through with it because playing live really is the coolest thing for me. And I can also be funny on stage: once I knocked over the stool right in the middle of a concert and had to continue playing the song while standing up. That really was a laugh for the fans…

Thank you to THUKST for the translation!

Mad love to read a Gustav Interview!

When nature calls! For their Japanese fans Tokio Hotel have come up with something special – more specifically Bill (21). The singer has picked just cool outfits out of his closet for the big trip to Tokyo. On the arrival at the airport he wore a panda-bear-hat. “Of course not real fur”, confirmed TH-Manager David Jost. And at a shooting Bill surprised with the Little Red Cap- and Captain-Look. The effort pays off: Tokio Hotel were on the day of their arrival the most searched term on Google, their video and their CD were number 1. Congratulations!

Five years ago, the Kaulitz twins, Bill and Tom, wrote about themselves in Bravo. It’s so fun to read this old stuff.

Bill about Bill – translation by SandraZ
I never had a problem with being alone, on the contrary. In Kindergarten there was this little house or a cosy corner (area with pillows and cuddly toys), where you could go to with your friends. I didn’t really like that in those days. I would rather stay home all day. School was also totally gross. But without all that, you can’t really get ahead in life. Thats why I decided to go anyway.

I am so happy to have my mother in my life. She is very important to me She has always supported Tom and me. Also with our music
She even used to drive the entire band to gigs. That was cool, but their were also rules and restrictions at home. But that wasn’t a bad thing.

Things got rough when our parents divorced. We were 6 years old. It was simply a strange feeling to think that from now on dad wouldnt be living with us anymore. It was a terrible thing back then. But nowadays I dont have any problems with that anymore, because I understand it better now. Its worse when parents are just staying together because of the kids.

Between our mother and us things were always great.
One time though she was really angry with us and disappointed, That was at a teacher-parents conference at school. All parents had complained about Tom and me. They wanted to take their children out of our class because of us. My mother was not happy about that. But the parents from the other kids from our village were just narrowminded people. They didnt get us.
We were allowed to stay out much later at night. That was so cool. I did however never take advantage of that, I never came home totally drunk nor did I throw up in front of my mother.

People who have also always liked us are our grandparents. And Grandma and Grandad are our biggest fans. They tape everything which is shown on TV about us on video and buy all the Bravo magazines. We can always depend on them
At school it was a totally different situation. Tom and me only had one best friend: Andreas. I never wanted to spend any time with any of the other people. They were all smart asses and bootlickers. Apart from that they often called me that stuck up guy with his head in the clouds.

But I didnt care- and today I couldn’t even care less. I’ve always had just one hobby: Music. And that has remained the same until today. When I have some time off, I lie on the couch and watch some TV. Or I party. I once tried horsebackriding even though I am teirribly afraid of horses. Luckily nothing happened to me. I havent had any bad injuries ever. Just the one time Í had to go to the hospital. Nothing spectacular: A mosquito had bit me in my ear. I am allergic to mosquitos. I thought it was really cool that Tom came to visit me every day, He is really very sweet in his own way.
The only thing I don’t really like about him is his macho behaviour. Okay, and his style is also not my thing. But the main thing is he likes it. We have always done as we pleased.

I am really amazed when I think about how are life has changed. But we are having fun! However there is a lot more stress than I would have ever imagined. Everyone thinks that when you are a Star, everything automatically comes your way. That is so not true. We have to work very hard for our succes. But its worth it. I wouldn’t want to do anything else but to make music. A lot of people ask us if being successfull has changed us. I don’t think it has. If so our family would have put a stop to that already long time ago. I will always be me. Ambitious and lazy, cheerfull and a bit selfish. No matter what other people say about me. And the most important thing in my life will always be my mother, my brother Tom and our band Tokio Hotel!

Tom about Tom – translation by Pat
Friendship is very important for me. It gives me strength.
In preschool I had my first really good friend.
We always went looking for stress/trouble with the 4th graders.
We thought that was extremely cool.
Even though we were smaller than those guys, we beat them everytime.
Unfortunately my friend moved to another city, that was so sad.
We have not seen each other since then, but he was my best friend.
Bill and I were raised as “key” children, cause our parents both worked.
it means that we were home by ourselves or at our grandmothers.
But when she didnt have time for us in the afternoons anymore, we had to go to the “hort”.
(I think it means something like afterschool program)
I absolutely hated it there.
First of, we didn’t get along with the other children, second the food was totally discusting.
they always had:”Dead grandma”, (that is small meatloaf with discusting sauce).
Third, we had to do our homework there.
After we had finished that, we were allowed to go out and play.
there was always something happening with the girls, when you played : “völkerball” with them once,
they would already fall in love with you.
That is where the loveletters started. They always said: can we meet in the “tube”?
Yes, No, or maybe.
it was a tube you could crawl through, everyone was always in there, kissing.
While we were hated at the “hort” we had to leave. I thought that was cool!
But then pre school came and that extremely sucked.
All the time I had to make this “punishment puzzle” which I ofcourse never managed to make.
Then when I finally got to school It made me so happy.
I can still remember what was in my schoolbag.
it was not only filled with candy, there was my first grade schoolbook/map, my pencilcase, markers and a whole bunch of other school stuff.
I was so happy with those things. and I felt so grown up on that day.
If I had known then that it would be so “shitty” as in preschool, I would never have gone.
from the second day on I disliked everything.
we were not allowed to talk to each other during class, but of course we didn’t agree with that.
Our teacher was completely annoying. She disliked Bill and me from the beginning.
Of course we didn’t want to go back there, but mom forced us.
I never let it get me down, and not by my mom either.
Outside this thing with school, mom wasn’t really strict with us.
I have always had a great bond with her. she always helped me and Bill when we had problems.
We were allowed to make our own decisions, because of that I now know what I like and dislike.
The thing I absolutely like is my grandmothers spaghetti.
she is the best cook and makes a delicious sauce.
I have tried to cook it the same way, but I can’t do it.
I think it must be her special pans.
that is why we always went to grandma straight after school for dinner.
she lived right next door to the school in Madgeburg.
My grandfather was my rolemodel.
To make him like me more, I even took up karate.
but at some point I confided in him that I didn’t really like this sport.
first I thought he would be dissapointed.
but it was totally okay by him.
after the fourth grade we moved out of our village.
There (in the new town) the other boys tried to scare us away from the school, because we always got the love letters.
But they didn’t succeed….and I still receive love letters…..

He already had myriads of romances! But deep in his heart the Tokio-Hotel-star wishes for love

Everyone would immediately sign this sentence: “I would love to find the big love.” But when Tom from Tokio Hotel says this, then it’s a total surprise. After all the 20-year-old skip any opportunity in the past to show off with his one-night-stands! But the rocker doesn’t enjoy the quick pleasures for one night anymore: “It doesn’t fulfill me anymore, I notice that more and more”, he said to Bravo. “There are sometimes one or two beautiful nights. But in the end I feel empty as before again. I’m as lonely as Bill.” Also his twin brother noticed that Tom isn’t happy: “He leads a sad life.”

Therefore I’d never ask him for a love-advice.”, Bill tells. “Quite the contrary: He actually learns by watching me. Because now he noticed that, what I already knew with 15: He shouldn’t waste his little free time with some brief relationships, but spend it with people, who really mean something to him!” Does Tom even still have hope to find THE girl? “I firmly believe that it could happen – at least I hope so.” We keep our fingers crossed for you, Tom!
——————————-
Katy Perry: Trouble with Tokio Hotel

Text at the picture with the VMA: In 2008 Tokio Hotel snatched the VMA for “Best Newcomer” from under Katy Perry’s nose

“Tokio Hotel are gay!” – “Katy is a diva!” How stars are arguing

The Tokio Hotel-fans are pissed off. Katy Perry offended their favourites. The event happened a few days ago at the Singfest Festival 2010 in Singapore. The 25-year-old dissed in her song “I can’t believe I fell in love with Tokio Hotel. You’re so gay and you don’t even like boys.” Cheeky!

Especially because the TH-boys Bill, Tom, Georg & Gustav stood on the same stage – Katy knew, that the band would hear. And it’s not the first time that the US-singer charges at the four boys from Magdeburg. She’s especially gunning for frontman Bill Kaulitz. Again and again she dedicates the song “Ur so gay” to him. But why is she so mad at the singer? Suspicious: Since the show of the Video Music Awards 2008 in Los Angeles Tokio Hotel seems to be a battleground for the pop-lady.

Back then, Katy Perry lost against the four in the category “Best Newcomer”. She doesn’t seem to have coped with this defeat since today. Bill, on the other hand, acts cool: “What Katy does, isn’t nice. But she is just a weird person. We’ve already met her a couple of times and she always acted like a little diva.”, the 20-year-old reveals. “But there are many superficial persons in the music business.” Peng! That hit home! Sounds like: Clear the ring for round two in the star-duel!

Scans & Translation via Billy for Tokio Hotel Info
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

My opinion? Katy is wily like a fox and knows that what she does will get attention. Your thoughts?

(original German text: Meike Werkmeister, Sascha Wernicke)

Top, left twins picture: Different on the outside – the same at heart: Bill and Tom (both 16) feel magically connected with each other
Big Tom picture: Tom always knows how his twin brother is doing. Even if he happens to not be around.
Small picture of twins on horses: Riding when they were 12 (years old): (it was) already easy to tell them apart visually

They think it’s cool to be twins
Tom: I can’t imagine a life without Bill. We’ve been hanging around each other since we were sh*tting in our diapers. I think it’s very cool to have a twin brother – it’s really lovely to have a person that’s so close to you.

They have the same dreams
Bill: Sometimes we realise we’ve been dreaming the exact same thing when we tell each other our dreams in the mornings!

Their moods are the same
Bill: We’re happy about the same things – and are sad about the same. If one of us gets up in the morning and is in a foul mood, the other one is in a foul mood as well…

They looked the same when they were children
Tom: Our mum dressed us the same when we were little. Then, when we started school we wanted to wear different things. When we were eight years old we moved into totally different directions.

They took the p*ss out of their kindergarten teachers
Tom: In kindergarten we made our teachers’ blood boil. We had shirts with “Bill” and “Tom” embroidered on them – but we swapped with each other. So when nobody knew who was who anymore we cracked up laughing. Unfortunately it wouldn’t work in school anymore – we were already too different then…

They already had their own style aged eight
Tom: Early on we already longed to emphasise what sets us apart and to show that we are individual personalities…

They want to be different
Tom: I think it’s good that we look different. I don’t want to be like Bill and Bill (does) not (want to be) like me. I couldn’t imagine walking around like my brother anymore.

They don’t have the same hobbies
Tom: Bill is rather creative, draws a lot and designs clothes. I do graffiti and ride BMX (bikes). The hobby we share is music.

They’ve got the same best friend
Tom: Our best friend is called Andreas. The three of us always hang out. There’s no jealousy or hassle. I think Andreas likes the two of us the same…

Page 2

Twins photo shoot picture: The very different twins are best friends. By the way: Tom is ten minutes older than Bill
Baby twins picture: Bill (in the front) and Tom (in the back) when they were one year old.
Bill picture: Bill understands Tom even without many words – both laugh about the same things and are sad at the same time…
Bottom, twins photo shoot picture: Everything is identical: without hair and clothes one couldn’t tell them apart
Bottom, mini twins picture: Bill (left) and Tom (right) on their first day in school

Tom has got more patience
Bill: Whenever I wanted to learn an instrument but couldn’t do it after one day, I immediately gave up. Tom is harder on himself there.

Tom can also sing
Bill: Tom has got a good voice but he just doesn’t dare to sing. However, I’m still the better singer…

They love fast food
Tom: Bill likes everything I like to eat as well – and vice versa. We like fast food, pizza, rice pudding and pasta bakes. We don’t eat what we don’t know. Both of us can’t cook at all.

Bill is better in school
Bill: This year my average was 1.9 and Tom’s 2.2. Last year it was exactly the other way around. We love subjects where you get to chat a lot, like, Art, Social Studies or Ethics. We’re also pretty good in German. Very much unlike P.E., Maths or Physics.

They’re still identical in the nude
Bill: Our physical appearance is exactly the same. If one would shave off our hair and strip us off our clothes, we’d still look identical!

Tom isn’t that cool
Bill: I’m the more sensitive one of us both; I always give everything lots of thought. However, Tom isn’t as cool as he looks either…

Bill talks more
Bill: Both of us talk incredibly much and fast. I’m talking a few more miles a minute though. On the other hand, Tom’s voice is a bit deeper.

They hit each other
Bill: Luckily we see most things the same way so it doesn’t often come to blows. However, if there’s trouble between us, we also hit each other. However, it’s us against them, should anybody interfere then.

Teachers have to suffer
Bill: We were put into different classes because it was almost impossible to cope with us if the two of us were disputing (a matter). Now, we’ve got optional subjects where we are together again – the teachers are pretty much p*sses off by that.

Tom is a grouch
Bill: Teachers always say that I’m the more approachable and more open-minded one of the two of us. Tom is more of a grump…

They like the same girls
Bill: Tom and I always fancy the same girls. However, it doesn’t cause arguments. We let the girl decide – and the loser has to accept it…

Their first kiss was with the same girl
Tom: We were nine (years old). I kissed her first, Bill only later. However, both of us thought it was horrible!

Bill is the stud-muffin
Bill: Being the front man I get most of the fan mail. But things are also going pretty well for Tom. He just makes more of it than me…

Tom has more sex
Bill: I’m more into long-term relationships. I feel sorry for the girls who get their hearts broken by my brother. That’s to say, he’s really not good at breaking-up. Even though I’ve already had a few girlfriends – but I haven’t had sex with as many as Tom.

They don’t share everything
Tom: We don’t share girlfriends – and clothing! I could never wear a pair of Bill’s trousers; I’d feel totally uncomfortable with it. Bill wears much tighter clothes than I do. It’s also easy to tell our underwear apart: That’s to say, I wear wide boxer shorts and Bill tight ones…

Bill can’t handle money
Bill: I just buy way more clothes for myself. That’s why I don’t have any money left at the end of the month – unlike Tom. He just gives it more thought what he spends his money on…

Tom sleeps longer
Bill: In the mornings I need two hours in the bathroom with showering and painting my nails. Tom, however, can always sleep for another hour…

Twins photo shoot picture: Together they’re unbeatable. The super twins always stick together.
Twins picture rowing: Tom (left) and Bill (right) aged nine with their mother Simone while rowing

They always know how the other one is doing
Tom: Once I happened to be with my dad on my own when we were younger and suddenly I knew: Bill is not doing well, something had happened. I convinced my dad to call home – and I was right. Bill was just on his way to the hospital because he’s seriously allergic to mosquito bites and had been bitten. We immediately drove home then.

They can read minds
Bill: Tom often says the exact same thing I was also just about to say. And when I look at him, I also know exactly what he’s thinking.
Tom: We always know exactly what the other one is about to say next. Some things we don’t need to say out loud anymore.

News Ticker

Eggs and lighters were thrown at Tokio Hotel during a performance at the Waltroper Parkfest. When Tom got hit by an egg in the face, the guys walked off stage. “There are always haters”, Bill says. “However, I don’t understand why they had to ruin the concert for everybody else.”

Nobody is closer to them than the other one
Bill: Tom is even closer to me than my mum. Of course she’s very important to us but we’re connected by something very special.

Together they’re stronger
Tom: Each of us is very strong and no pushover. But together we’re unbeatable.

They want to live together
Bill: When we’ll be moving out from home, we want to share a place. I just can’t imagine living somewhere without Tom.

Gustav and Georg have to suffer
Bill: Sometimes it’s pretty tough for Gustav and Georg to stand a chance against us when we’re discussing. However, we’re trying not to leave them out. They’ve also known us for a long time and can deal with it quite well, actually.

Only death can separate them
Tom: I’d feel totally alone without Bill. Death is the only thing that can separate us…

Tokio Hotel Style

Tom – Tom’s Cool Hip Hop Style
Picture 1: Tom (16) does not leave the house without sweatbands. He has already bought himself a total of ten of them (ca. 10€)
Picture 2: Rasta man Tom uses the Sony Ericsson T630 – he is not particularly fond of ringing tones…
Picture 3: Hip Hop style: Tom’s shirt is by Vokál (70€), the baggy [trousers] by Sir Benni Miles (80€)
Picture 4: Tom listens to a lot of Hip Hop on his mini iPod (ca. 199€). He has already uploaded 350 songs in total.

Picture 2: His hair only holds because of the good “Aldi” hairspray (1€)
Picture 3: Bill’s (16) trousers are self-made. “I spent a day with mum to tailor two old jeans into one!”
Picture 4: Bill always has the MP3 mobile phone Nokio 3300 (1€) on him. His favourite footwear are the “Nike Air Force” (90€)

Article
Bill and co. got a huge award – golden record in Taiwan! But it doesn’t mean anything when they were hungry all the time…

Taiwan – an island near China, 12 hours away from Europe, by plane. Even there, the guys from Tokio Hotel are extremely famous. The band received a golden record for their last album “Humanoid”. Of cource, Bill, Tom (both 20), Gustav (21) and Georg (23) came to Taiwan in person, to get their award. But what’s the use of it, when their tummies weren’t full…

__________

Bravo charts: Oops! Who said it’s over with Tokio Hotel and their numerous internet fans? The quartet from Magdeburg has risen to the top of the chart once again, like a Phoenix, and they’re planning to stay there for a while…
————————————–

The part about them being hungry is kind of random. heehee

Thank to Nico for bringing this and to Merle from the UK for the amazing translation. A secret trip to London by Tokio Hotel, all those years ago. So amazing what this band has been able to do, and what a fun life they have had! SO many countries they have seen!

NOW THEY’RE GETTING THEIR INTERNATIONAL CAREER STARTED

Nobody knew about it – except for BRAVO: Tokio Hotel secretly travelled to London! That’s where they’re getting their international career started. All the pictures and facts from the metropolis of pop [music]…

PAGE 2

It was a very well-kept secret: only BRAVO exclusively accompanied Tokio Hotel on their trip to London. Bill (16), Tom (16), Gustav (17) and Georg (19) are recording their singles “Durch den Monsun”, “Schrei” and “Rette mich” which were released in Germany so far in English in the British metropolis of pop [music]. Bill: “Singing in German is easier for me but I’ll get it done somehow!” Together with BRAVO the four guys from Magdeburg go on a sightseeing tour through this global city before heading to the studio: Big Ben! Buckingham Palace! Tower Bridge! And the Tokio boys in the middle of it! First is Piccadilly Circus. The guys are totally overwhelmed by all the commotion there. “There’s always action!” a delighted Tom says. The journey to London made a dream come true for him. “The city never sleeps. I think that’s great!” The Tokios immediately get their cameras out and take pictures of each other in front of the huge, brightly coloured neon signs. “I’m just capturing everything!”, Tom explains. “After all one doesn’t experience something like this every day!” They’re just standing in the world-famous square for several minutes and enjoy the lively atmosphere. They’re also dying to see the “London Underground” once – the tube of Britain’s capital.

PAGE 3

Band with Union Flag top picture: The four guys totally dig London and have a blast on their sightseeing tour through the British capital
Bill in phone box picture: “They just look super!” Bill thinks and gets inside one of the typical English phone boxes for a picture
Background band/Piccadilly Circus picture: The band is impressed with the colourful neon signs in Piccadilly Circus
Left bottom, Bill/Tom picture: With his camera Tom takes a picture of his twin brother for the family album
Bill/Tom shop picture: The guys buy chocolate bars and delicious muffins in a shop on Parliament Street

However, when they get their cameras out, a tube worker rigorously advises them “No pictures, please!” The guys don’t let that damp their spirits though! They find the red phone boxes particularly funny – everybody is dying to get their picture taken inside of them. When it’s Bill’s turn, it suddenly rings! “What’s going on here?”, he calls out. The security guy immediately susses out the situation: wrong number! The guys burst out laughing! Next stop on the tour is Buckingham Palace. Will they maybe meet the Queen? “I don’t think our music would mean anything to her. She only listens to classical music anyway.” Bill reckons. Instead there are quite a number of tourists bustling about outside the gates. And they rather marvel at Bill’s extraordinary outfit than the palace! Some girls even get themselves autographs! Tom: “The girls really doll themselves up here. That’s really cool!” [the] Only downside [being]: “There’s a problem with the language if you want to come on to one [girl]!” Everybody laughs! Don’t the four of them have a dictionary with them? “We’ve always got an interpreter”, Gustav reveals. They won’t need one for their next stop: Switzerland. Tokio Hotel tell us a secret before they say good-bye: “We’re considering to release another new single or a new song…”

PAGE 4

Tom and postcards top picture: Even though Tom doesn’t buy any souvenirs “But I’m still writing cards for my family!”
Band eating picture: Sightseeing gives an appetite! The guys recharge their batteries in between. However, they’re not crazy about British food: they rather eat croissants instead of bacon and sausages.
Right top, bigger band picture: Gustav and Georg have already been to London before. Tom and Bill marvel at the sights for the first time.
Band/Big Ben picture: The guys pose in front of Big Ben for a picture to remember – it’s only a shame that the clock doesn’t chime
Tom and fans picture: Even in London the guys get asked for autographs. However, Tom and the others don’t have time to flirt
Band with map/guide book picture: Georg wants to know “Where are we now?” Bill shows the others on the map what they should definitely go to see
Right, band picture: For Tokio Hotel even the sun makes an appearance in the grey sky that’s characteristic for London. The guys enjoy it!
Round band picture: “We’re really looking forward to the [BRAVO] Super Show because we can perform for the BRAVO readers then.”
