From 2006: Gustav from Tokio Hotel likes it LOUD! A rare interview with Gustav Schäfer! This is Bravo #26 – Germany

“I Like it Loud!” Gustav from Tokio Hotel

Tokio Hotel drummer Gustav (17) rarely opens up in interviews – (he) rather let’s his band mates do the talking. Now he’s making an exception for BRAVO – and very openly talks about his life

Gustav’s role models are heavy bands like Metallica, Motörhead and System Of A Down

Band picture: Tom (16), Bill (16), Gustav (17) and Georg (19) during their legendary appearance at Amsterdam’s rock club Paradiso in the beginning of June
Gustav with headphones picture: Heavy, loud sounds are blaring from his headphones most of the times
Gustav with fans picture: Gustav and his fans: they love him because he’s so natural and down-to-earth

“I was the funny one with the big gob!”
“I’ve only really been in love twice.” “I’ve started to drum underneath our dining table.”

By Gustav
The earliest memory in my life is from a fall! I’ve been riding a tricycle and a wheel suddenly broke off in a bend. I fell over and cried because the tricycle was totally broken. All of this happened in Magdeburg where I grew up – in a single-family house with a little garden. I’ve got one sister – she’s older. She only lives 500 metres away from us. We often talk on the phone. Sometimes I drop by at her place in the afternoon. Then we’ll drink tea and chat for a bit. She’s also been given me flirting advice before. Once I really liked a girl that was always standing at the bus stop with me in the mornings. My sister then told me what would be the best way for me to get to know her. However, it didn’t work out. I just didn’t have the guts to talk to her. Currently I also don’t have a girlfriend. Just because there’s no time for it. I’ve only really been in love twice anyway. Unfortunately one of them already had a boyfriend – and even though I had been together with the other one, it was only a long-distance relationship. She lived 13 kilometres away from me. You couldn’t just drive there without a car. So we broke it off eventually. With girls I pay a lot of attention to the eyes and the face.

However, the hair colour absolutely doesn’t matter to me. I was always the funny one with the big gob in school. Now I’m a bit quieter but sometimes I turn it up on the tour bus. I’ve already been playing drums back then (in school). My musical career started underneath our dining table – during the evening meal. Back then my father was listening to t a lot of Eric Clapton, Phil Collins and Led Zeppelin. He filled the whole house with their sounds. And so I started to drum along. My father immediately registered me when a music school opened in our neighbourhood then. Of course there were also times when I couldn’t be bothered with practising anymore. However, nowadays I’m glad I went through with it because playing live really is the coolest thing for me. And I can also be funny on stage: once I knocked over the stool right in the middle of a concert and had to continue playing the song while standing up. That really was a laugh for the fans…

and the cover

Mad love to read a Gustav Interview!

Article – Translation by 619/THCN Thank you, thank you!

Interview with Tokio Hotel in Japan

Now, this is the first time that I have my life, not being Tokio Hotel. (Bill)

INTERVIEW & PHOTOS: YOKO KATO

Having mini live at Audi Forum Tokyo. From left to right: Georg Listing(b.), Tom Kaulitz(g.), Bill Kaulitz(vo.), Gustav Schäfer(dr.). (6: Inrock has reversed positions of Bill and Tom, so I correct it.)

Tokio Hotel visit Japan for MTV’s VIDEO AID JAPAN (hereafter referred to VMAJ). In our last issue, we published our close coverage and photos of Tokio Hotel, this time, we will publish their interview. We haven’t met Kaulitz brothers for three months, they are still handsome, but Tom has wear a thin beard. Though they are twins, you can distinguish them from their image. Bill has shown up with beard in an award, it seems that fans are shocked. And, this time, apart from VMAJ, Tokio Hotel has also done mini live in Audi’s Showroom. There’re a lot of fans saying that they can’t wait to enjoy a normal concert. “It doesn’t matter how much money you can spend, only those, who have won the tickets, can attend this live. It’s hard.” said the fans. According to Germany’s staff, Japan’s promoter has contacted them for a few times, the band’s also full of drive. It may not be a long way to fulfill fans’ wish…?

－－Japan’s summer is humid, right?
Bill Kaulitz (vo.): yap, it’s really hard that you have to work under such weather. I don’t care if we are in vacation, and relax for the whole day.
Tom Kaulitz (g.): But it’s better than cold!
Bill: surely, it’s better than winter.

－－By the way, Tom, what’s happening to your beard? Fans are talking about it!
Tom: You don’t like it? *laugh*

Small photos:
Left: Q&A section after live. “Do you like Japanese girl?” such normal question was asked. Though fans all know the boys’ answer, still they want to ask.
Right: In Q&A section after live, the boys were asked about their plan for coming to Japan in the future. They answered that it was in progress, however, due to the popularity gap between different countries, it’s very difficult carry out the plan… Though the boys are full of drive.
P45 (Bill): In the party, people were speechless with Bill’s mystic beauty, no matter boys or girls.

－－..Well, what can I say… *grin*.
Bill & Tom: *laugh*
Tom: I’m as beautiful as usual, right *grin*? Well…I think that beard can hide my rough skin. Should I continue to expose my rough skin, as Bill does so, or should I grow a beard to cover it? I chose the later one.
Gustav Schäfer (dr.): Even you do so, you are as beautiful as usual! *grin*
Tom: Right? *grins*
Bill: But, for Tom and I, it’s not a big deal. I’m a bit lazy in the morning, I also grow beard, the same as everyone. If it is okay for me not to shave off my beard, of course, this way is always easier.
Tom: Gustav got sternal seta! *laugh*
Bill: Yeah, sternalia! *laugh*

In the morning, when I saw Bill’s face with beard, I was shocked, even I am the twin brother… (Tom)

－－ *laugh*. Right. But the look of you guys is part of the image of Tokio Hotel, to fans, it’s a great deal.
Bill: You’re right. For us, it’s completely normal, but for fans, it’s big problem, it’s strange.

－－Don’t say something like that, don’t you care about your look and styling all the time?
Bill: You’re right, but I’m also human being, the same as everyone! *grin*

－－Okay, but I just can’t imagine that Bill has such side.
Bill: *laugh* No, no, I am the same as everyone, I grow beard.
Tom: Even I am the twin brother, I am shocked! In the morning, when I saw this guy’s face, I was just like “What’s happening to this face!? This is not Bill!”. I’m really openmouthed. *laugh*
Bill: *laugh* But the worst thing is that I’m bored by myself, so I always change my look.
Tom: Just go out with your natural beauty. *grin* Hey, do I look old?
Bill: You are just 21, so it’s okay, isn’t it?
Tom: Yes, it’s okay. If I wear a beard, I look like 21, right? I’m no longer 16, 17 years old.

－－*laugh* Let’s back to our subject. First, I would like to thank you guys for supporting victims in Tohoku and Fukushima. You guys have done a lot of work in helping them?
Bill: Yes. When we heard of the earthquake, we were really shocked, since we just came back from Japan a few weeks before the earthquake.

－－It’s graceful that you guys could go back safely.
Bill: Yes, of course, but we really love this country, we like Tokyo the best, so we treat Tokyo’s matter as our matter. As the earthquake is really shocking, we think that, we will do anything if they need us, we want to show our support to Japan! So we are really happy that we can raise money for Japanese Red Cross Society with MTV.

－－Your fans have also done something, right?
Bill: Yes, in order to raise money for Japanese Red Cross Society, we have designed some buttons, and many fans bought these buttons. I’m really happy to see fans helping us.

－－Also, you guys will have a collaboration with Germany’s football team
player Kagawa (Borussia Dortmund’s MF Shinji Kagawa), right?
Bill: Yes, we met him recently. Although he says “I’m not that familiar with football…”, he’s really a nice guy.

－－What will you guys do?
Bill: If there’s any chance, we will grasp it with joy. For this time’s MTV, there’re really a lot of artists gathered together to show their support. I think that’s really great. The scene of many people holding together for the same purpose is nice.

－－After the earthquake disaster, many Japanese start thinking about their lives and destinies. Do you have anything that you think that you must do in your life? What’s in your mind when disaster comes?
Tom: Yes, I think that when something like that happens, a great impact will be made on everyone, all over the world. It happens so quickly, just in an instant, you can actually feel the terror of Nature.
Bill: Life is really fragile… I’m really scared.
Tom: The earthquake has changed the life of people all over the world. We all reflect on our life. There’re so many people being killed, people all feel heartbreaking, so people is affected, for no reason.

－－You guys are stars, there are many people admire your music and existence, right? Do you guys think that it’s destiny.
Bill: Yeah, it can only be destiny. We have talked about this in many interview, that we are saved by music, in many ways. We, not only immerse ourselves in our music, but also in many other music. When we are sad, we will go to party, we listen to different music according to the atmosphere. Also, we create our own music, we are inspired by a lot of stories, and write our songs, this is the way which can solve our problem best. Everything around us is our inspiration. For us, music is a therapy, it works in different way. We will be happy if we can play such role. Though we are amazed that fans value us, we are really happy that they need our band.

－－I see. So, you guys are working on your new album?
Bill & Tom: Yes!

－－Where do you guys get inspiration from for your songs recently?
Bill: Tom and I get all the inspiration from our life. Now, this is the first time that I have my life, not being Tokio Hotel. We are always touring, and grew up in the eye of public, it might be the first time that we can live and keep our privacy. So we try to challenge everything that we couldn’t do in the past, this way of life is new to us, not touring. So, now, we get our inspiration from whom we met and our life. And movie. We like watching movie.
Tom: Also, time is important. Having enough time inspires us a lot. We live with our own lifestyle, have few weeks doing nothing. I think is really great. Songs that we bring to our fans is certainly great.
Bill: The most important thing is that we don’t have pressure. The date of release of our next album is not decided, to us, this is important. We are not a band that will release an album annually. We are kind of free. As we think that ideas come to our mind spontaneously, we may have to spend 2, 3 or 4 years for an album, so we don’t know when will our new album be finished. We will spend as much time as we like on it, this is important.

If we are not 100% satisfied with our work, we will absolutely not make it public. (Tom)

－－You’re right. So far, how many songs have you guys written?
Tom: If you are talking about the number of songs, the number is enough for us to go to the studio. But we don’t want this. We will keep on writing songs and write down our ideas, production keeps on…
Bill: We can’t tell you exactly how many songs we have written. In our laptop, there are a lot of songs we wrote since 2000. We have taken some songs from there and made some modifications. It’s difficult to say exactly how many songs we have written. Anyway, we have written many songs, a mountain of songs.
Tom: One day, inside this mountain, we will think that “Ok, we are ready!”. At that time, there’re songs that can be combined into an album.
Bill: There are some songs that I don’t like after recording.

－－Could you guys upload the first 20 seconds of one of the song on Internet?
Tom: *grin* There are too many songs for free nowadays.

－－Okay…*grin*
Bill: But if we are 100% satisfied with our work, we will share with our fans.
Tom: Yap, conversely, if we are not 100% satisfied with our work, we will absolutely not make it public.

－－You guys are all perfectionists. *grin*
Bill: Yap, as we are perfectionists, we want to write music with high quality. In the recent music industry, there are many people treat quality as minor, we want some bands creating music of high quality.

－－I see. By the way, your ring is really marvelous! Can you introduce to us? (there are a few rings, they nearly hide Bill’s finger. It seems that the rings have gimmicks)
Bill: This one? I brought this from Los Angeles’ secondhand clotheses store, it seems that it was originally an old watch.

－－From Melrose Avenue, right? (editor: Los Angeles’ most fashionable street, with lots of secondhand clotheses store and characteristic fashion stores.)
Bill: Yes, from Melrose Avenue! You know it.

－－Cause we had asked from Tom that you bought lots of things there. *grin* (6: From InRock #326)
Bill: Yap, that’s my favourite place in Los Angeles.

－－But, isn’t it inconvenient to carry such big ring?
Bill: No, I love accessories. I have lots of accessories, a crazy number of accessories. There are chains, rings and other accessories. I have lots of accessories in my closet, a few thousands of them.

－－*grin* By the way, your next single for radio is the great hit song “Monsoon”. It’s a new song here, in Japan. Can you tell us some stories about this song?
Bill: Yes. This is one of our first recording song by Tokio Hotel. It’s in our first album, our first single in Germany, and the start of everything, so it’s an important song, full of our memories. It fulfill our dreams, fans love this song. And “Monsoon” is also the most viewed video… We have brought this song to many countries. We have lots of memories in this song. We have also made a really beautiful video! Of course, it’s an old song now…

－－You guys has shot another video?
Bill: Yeah, shot in Cape Town that one. Don’t watch the German version, I really don’t like it!

－－Really?
Bill: Yes, though it’s part of our history, I don’t think we had made a good video, so I’m not that like it. But it’s our starting point.

－－You were so cute in that video! I have watched it for a few times.
Tom: *laugh* You have watched the whole?
Bill: Yap, we had his video, then a few years later, we shot the English version in Cape Town. It’s a love song!
Tom: We were on an helicopter in the English version, after the shoot of the video, the helicopter was broken down.
Bill: It seems that it can no longer be manned.
Tom: We didn’t know this, and we got on it. The shot goes well, but it’s broken down a few days later.
Bill: It’s too old, that there’s even no license saying that it can be manned.

－－It’s great that you guys are safe!!
Bill & Tom: Yeah..*laugh** There’s such story.

－－And, there’s one more important thing. A few months ago, you guys had beaten of a lot of big artists and win the MTV O Music Award? It’s great, can you talk about this?
Tom: Yes. Now, we’re about to compose our mind and stay in the studio, we were not interviewed often, we are surprised! Even in such period, fans vote for us.
Bill: We didn’t expect to it!
Tom: We even didn’t know that we were nominated, after knowing that, we just thought that “it’s great, but this is O Award, we won’t win it”.
Bill: It’s really unexpected. In the past, when we won Headliner (6: EMA in 2008), and many other awards, we didn’t feel the sense of reality… These all are achieved by our fans, for us. We are really proud of our fans, they support us greatly. Now, we don’t have tour, just have our production in the studio, but still we won the award, we are really happy! It’s really cool!

－－It’s an award for fans, right? It means that your fans are the best?
Bill & Tom: Yes!
Bill: It’s an award for fans! Our fans are from foreign countries (Outside America), still we won the award, it’s cool!!

－－It’s really marvelous!

Tokio Hotel could beat each other up just for fun.
In the beginning of the summer Tokio Hotel visited Russia to take part in the Muz-TV Awards. As it turned out, the guys only support the German car industry and frequently think about a soundtrack for their funeral.

Billboard: Hi, guys! Today we will play in game-interview. The rules are: you pick a card in turns and ask the question to who is sitting next to you.
Tom: I start!
Billboard: Ok. I remind that you need to question the person next to you.
Tom: Oh, next to me! Ok.
Georg: This question is perfect for Bill.
Tom: What is the silly thing you did at a concert?
Bill: The silliest thing I did at a concert.
Tom: No, silly.
Bill: Yeah. You know, there are some kind of mistakes that are happening sometimes. So, it’s like silly things, you know, [once] we all fell from the stage together in… Where was it?
Georg: I think, it was in Russia, in Saint-Petersburg…
Tom: No, but it was in Russia.
Bill: It was in Russia somewhere.
Tom: Riga.
Georg: No, it’s not Riga.
Bill: Whatever, somewhere. And the stage had broken down and we all were on the catwalk, it was kind of funny. And oh! The first show we had on our last tour in «Luxemburg». Yes, how [do you say] «Luxemburg» in English?
Georg: Luxembourg.
Bill: I was falling off the stage, the catwalk was too short. I thought it’s longer.
Tom: But Bill himself is this silly thing.
Bill: This kind of stuff happens to everyone.

Bill: What is good and what’s bad in Germany? Oh, ok. Tom… (Laughing)
Tom: Me? What’s really amazing in Germany is Magdeburg, that is really a nice city. I think there are really good clubs in Magdeburg. You can go to «Factory», that is a really good club. What else is good in Magdeburg? Oh, in Germany?
Georg: I don’t know. What’s really good in Germany is that you can drive fast cars…
Tom: That is right.
Bill: The best thing. That is best thing ever. I think that’s not [possible] in any other countries, alright?
Tom: No.
Georg: No, this is only left in Germany.
Bill: That is a lot of fun. Only on German Autobahn you can drive as fast as you want.
Tom: What is not good, for example, I mean, if you are not a good looking guy like Georg, it is really hard to get women. You know, you have to pay a lot of money. It is really expensive. That is maybe a bad thing in Germany. Prostitutes are very expensive.
Bill: (Looking at Gustav’s question) I know.
Gustav: What song will be played at your funeral?
All: Oh.
Tom: That is a good question.
Bill: That is a good question. I have like a playlist, you know, for my funeral. It’s like, you know, I’ll have kind of a compilation with a lot of different stuff, because you can change it as you want. So definitely «Tokio Hotel» because you know that is the big love of our lives.
Georg: Which songs?
Bill: It is really hard. I think…
Georg: «Don’t Jump».
Bill: Yeah, «Don’t Jump». I think…
Tom: Maybe, «Ready, Set, Go» would be a good song.
Georg: «Human Connect to Human».
Bill: Or «Rescue Me». I mean it will be too late, but… No, at the moment…Tom and me…
Tom: «Live Every Second» (Laughing)
Bill: What? «Live Every Second» (All are laughing)
Bill: No, i think «Anthony Hammond», he is a great musician that I love as a singer. And another song from my childhood would be «Magic Dance» from David Bowie. This is kind of a fun song, he did for «Labyrinth» which was my childhood movie.

Tom: Yeah. [a] Person who did change my life. I’ll answer this question! Georg has changed it, but it’s for the best! I met him 10-11 years ago and [it] happened…
Bill: Haircut!
Tom: Exactly!
Georg: Tell some fact about the person sitting right to you (that surprises fans).
Bill: To Tom.
Georg: Tell something that the fans don’t know about you.
Tom: No, you have to tell [something] about me.
Georg: I tell something about you. Oh, ok. (Tom is laughing) Mmm…
Tom: Tom’s new piercing.
Georg: That’s maybe the most important thing which happened [in] the last month.
Tom: I have a new piercing.
Bill: Oh, what should be written on your gravestone? Tom…
Tom: On my gravestone – «A psalm a day keeps the doctor away.» (Laughing)
Bill: Awesome. (Laughing)
Gustav: Tell something bad about the person sitting [to your] right.
Bill: Tell something bad.
Tom: About what?
Bill: About me.
Georg: Something bad about you.
Gustav: There are no bad things to tell about Bill. He is just perfect.
Tom: He is silly. He lost his mind. It’s cool.
Bill: Yeah.
Billboard: Ok. Yeah, Tom. I think, that is a good question.
Tom: This is a good question? (Reading and laughing). That is good for Georg, right? You are sitting on the toilet and there is no [toilet] paper left. What do you do?
George: I always take paper with me.
Tom: Georg, I mean, when we were on holidays and he made big business in the water.
Georg: What? (Georg is laughing)
Tom: At the beach, there were a lot of stones. And it was like a stone beach and he took some stones.
Georg: What nickname did you have at school? Bill.
Bill: «Hobbit». [that's] His nickname.
Georg: I asked your nickname.
Bill: I’ve seriously never had a nickname.
Georg: What? Your nickname was…Tom, oh Bill, you wanna tell what your nickname was.
Bill: Which nickname do you mean? Maybe, you had a nickname for me. But seriously I had no nickname for myself. I just think that my name was short enough. I was only just called » Bill».
Tom: Everyone wase like: «Hey, where is the loser? Hey Tom, where is your loser-brother?»
George: Actually, you have to know: Bill is his nickname. His name is William. (Laughing)

Bill: Oh, if I could destroy one bad thing in the world it would be…
Tom: What? [something] Bad?
Bill: Bad thing. I think, you know for me and especially for Tom and me, I think… We love animals so much. Tom and me, we are vegetarian and we never wear fur. I think, the world should take more care of our animals we have. The last time when were in Africa, and we heard that animals die out because of humans’ activities. I would say: «We should take more care of our animals.» That will be something really important to me, yeah.
Gustav: Georg, choose your female name for yourself.
Bill: «Jacqueline» would be very, very nice.
Georg: I think that will be great.
Tom: «Ingeborg» (Laughing)
Gustav: I don’t know perfectly.
Bill: I think «Georgina».
Tom: Cool!
Georg: «Georgina». Yes, «Georgina» is a good name.
Tom: Ok. Is it right that Germany is famous because of its cars, football and porn?
Georg: Porn? I think that is not good job.
Tom: Porn. I viewed some short porn films for you.
Georg: Yeah, but…that is not good.
Tom: I mean I’ve chosen the best videos for Georg on [xxx].
Tom: Cars, yes. There are beautiful cars in Germany.
Bill: Tom and me, we are driving «Audi», so…
Tom: I have an «A8».
Bill: I drive a «Q7». A new one which is beautiful.
Georg: What will you do if you become invisible?
Tom: Mmm, I always said that I would go to the show of Jessica Alba, [but] she has a child now. So…
Georg: Isn’t she pregnant again?
Tom: She is pregnant again, yeah. It’s not my child, but…
Georg: Are you sure?
Tom: Yes, and I’m very upset.
Georg: Maybe, I would go to a bank and get me some money.
Tom: Some money? But you have enough money.
Georg: Yeah, that’s right. (Laughing)
Bill: I would like to play tricks on people. Like, you know, taking someone’s clothes off.
Georg: I don’t think that is funny.
Bill: I love all that [kind of] stuff, you know, have this on [hidden] cameras and I love those shows.
Tom: I would hit Georg the whole day.
Bill: And that will be fun.
Georg: That is great idea.

November 9th: We invited Germany’s biggest teenie-stars over for a talk. The Ochsenknecht and the Kaulitz brothers- born at the age of reunion- on Eastern & Western Germany, old home and new values.
(translation for this was done by ziggy back in 2007 – thank you!)

november 9th: we invited germany’s biggest teenie-stars over for a talk.
the ochsenknecht and the kaulitz brothers- born at the age of reunion- on eastern & western germany, old home and new values.

Berlin-Mitte, a suite in the “Ritz Carlton”- every girl below 16 would have to be instantly re-animated: the four most important boys of germany are sitting on a leather sofa, are eating gummy bears and are getting into the talk. in the back, on the carpet floor, is sitting the entourage: grown-up people who are wearing crew-tickets around their necks and are giving us a hard time because time is short. right now, everyone wants the Kaulitz and Ochsenknecht brothers. two of them are touring through france with Tokio Hotel, the other two have just signed their record deals and done new movies. all four of them are very well behaved: get up, shake hands, say “glad to meet you”- they’re obviously not doing it for the first time. our plan: talk to them about their home, their country, meaning germany. talk with Bill and Tom Kaulitz from Loitsche near Magdeburg and Jimi Blue and Wilson Gonzales Ochsenknecht, the high-society kids from Grünwald near Munich.

SZ-Magazin: exactly 18 years ago, the wall fell, so you’re all about as old as the reunited germany. what does that day mean to you?

Bill: people celebrate. and we celebrate with them, even though we were not really affected by it. sill, we’re happy that we profited from the fall of the wall.
Jimi Blue (JB): my dad told me about it but a real meaning- not really, well, maybe a bit.
Tom: honestly, i don’t really care for that day.
Wilson Gonzales (WZ): it’s certainly touching to see reports on tv about how happy people were back then when they broke through the wall and were able to hug the people on the other side of the wall. when i see that, i realize how bad it must have been to live behind a wall like that.

what do you associate with the DDR (= eastern germany)?

Bill: it was never a hot topic for us. true, we’re touring other countries a lot and keep getting asked about it but i can only say it again: we only ever knew germany as one country.
Tom: the other day, someone in Italy asked us whether we’re excited because we’re from eastern germany and we’re able to see Rome now. and once, people even offered us bananas.
WG: i’ve been to an art school in Los Angeles for a year and people kept asking me about what Hitler is doing right now and whether we actually have fridges in germany already. someone needs to whack americans over the head so that they understand that germany is a normal country. there’s a lot of people in the USA who still believe what a lot of germans still think about eastern europe, namely that it’s totally lagging behind and uninteresting. when i think of the DDR, only the flag comes to mind with the hammer and the sickle. what about you, Jimi?
JB: what?
Bill: *laughs* didn’t pay attention, aw!
JB: well, i also only remember the flag.

WG and JB grew up in Grünwald, which is the posh district in munich and on top of that they were born into a popular family; Bill and Tom, you’re from Loitsche, a village in Magdeburg. would you say your childhood was more difficult?

Bill: east and west- i don’t make a difference. we also don’t make this “ossie” (people from eastern germany) and “wessi” (people from western germany) difference at all, those espressions don’t even exist for us anymore, except maybe for our teachers. i think the much bigger difference is: we grew up in a village and you in the city.
WG: Grünwald is just a village as well but true, it’s close to the city and that’s why we probably hung out there more. besides that, we accompanied our dad to premieres or filmings every now and then.
Tom: growing up in a village ain’t all that bad, at least until you’re a certain age. i mean where in the city can you build tree-houses? on the other hand, Bill and i always drew unwanted attention to us because we were looking different than the others. that’s why we’ve been dreaming of moving to Berlin from a young age on because everyone can run around there however they want to.
Bill: freedom has always been the most important thing for us. which is why i had “freiheit” tattooed on my left arm shortly before our 18th birthday.

can you still remember your first trip to Berlin?

Bill: sure, when we were 12, we got into a train and went there. Tom and i hardly had any money but we absolutely wanted to go up to the tv-tower. up there, we had much too expensive coffee- latte macchiato of course- and pretended to be able to afford it.
WG: i was 6 or 7 and can only remember going by subway and being in a sushi-bar. Berlin was like a small district of New York to me back then, i still remember that. today, i think that the people in Berlin are much more friendly than in Munich. they don’t care what you’re wearing but what brains you got. Berlin isn’t necessarily the cleanest but certainly the most artistic city in germany.
JB: true, there were a lot of stuck up people in Munich. everything’s much more mixed up in Berlin, there’s petty people and punks, a couple of freaks.. everything’s possible.

you’re on the road a lot more than other teenagers your age to go to concerts and filmings. where do you really feel at home?

Bill: in germany all the way even down to the point where i feel much more at home in german hotels than in hotels in say, Moscow or Paris, no matter how luxurious they are. especially the language gives you a feeling of being at home.
WG: true, that’s what i really figured out during my year in america- home hasn’t got anything to do with a certain town or place. and something else i noticed: a lot of people are dissing germany. and they’re wrong. germany is an awesome country, a lot better and more positive than the USA. americans are very artificial and way too many things are being directed by the state over there. you don’t get alcohol until you’re 21 and you can’t even smoke in your own home anymore when you live in a flat (note: ooohh, i hope i got that one right! *squints*)- you gotta imagine that!
JB: well, i think america is better than germany. it’s warm, the people are nice, they got nice beaches, Venice Beach and Las Vegas. i’d like to live there one day.
Tom: in other countries, there’s a lot of things you gotta get used to like for example that things can be really unorganized sometimes. germans are usually better at planning things, like the “Echo” awards in Berlin where we started practising two days ago- in Italy for example, big shows like that are being filmed right away. or Moscow: they didn’t even have finished building the stage an hour before the show.

is there something you don’t like about Germany?

Bill: clearly the school system. i’d grade it F.
WG: especially in bavaria!
Tom: the german school system differs from land to land- everyone’s on a different level. when you come to another city because you moved for example, you feel like you’ve landed on an entirely different planet.
WG: i changed schools a couple of times and loathed maths in one school and german in the other, that’s weird.
JB: which is why i quit school altogether. i still got a private teacher because of the education and stuff but school ain’t my kinda thing.

there’s this term of “german pettyness”. who or what do you think is petty?

WG: the kids in the posh clubs in Munich, the “P1″ for example, who throw their parent’s money around and run around in polo-shirts with the collars put up, those are petty. they think they can impress people with daddy’s credit card. i’m proud of earning my own money and can invite my friends for a drink every now and then.
Bill: i’m petty when it comes to one thing: being punctual. that’s really important to me. and being reliable.
JB: i’m pretty petty when it comes to food. i always need two forks, one for the main dish and one for the salad. and if i see even one mouldy spot in the shower, i’d rather not shower at all.
Tom: to me, petty people are people who are intolerant who got no way to express themselves and are always living by the rules. and i don’t mean laws by that but rules they made up themselves or let other people make up for themselves. people who only do what other people tell them to and who never peek over the edge of the plate and who always say “don’t do that! you’re not supposed to do that!” we used to live in a detached house settlement once, in an area with playing-roads and stuff and man, there were some really petty people there. but we’re far away from all that already.

the past couple of weeks ago, the media has been talking a lot about the “german autumn”. RAF – does that tell you anything at all?
(note: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_Army_Faction)

WG: there was this one terrorist they let lose again. or didn’t they? or did they just protest against letting her free again?
JB: i read something about that in the Spiegel. that was interesting because Grünwald is near Straßlach where someone got killed back then, a president or something, at least there’s a memorial plate there.
WG: punk was founded at the same time, that honestly interests me more than the RAF.

the main focus of the RAF was among others to split wealth apart differently and more fairly. what do you think about that?

WG: people who are at the bottom nowadays don’t often even make an effort to climb to the top. they don’t try hard enough and maybe that’s why they become criminals.
JB: i think about that a lot, you know, why that’s the case that the rich people get everything trown at them as presents and the poorer people gotta buy everything themselves. when i’ve gotten older, i really am gonna change something about that, i don’t know what yet but i’ll at least give it a try.
Tom: still, there’s some kind of middle-class in germany. like our family for example. we were neither rich nor poor. in the end, everyone’s gotta make their own way and learn how to deal with frustrations of all kinds. we turned it into music, others are demonstrating or kick-boxing.

what kind of frustration?

Bill: we used to rebel for ourselves. we hated school and our teachers were really bad. my big advantage always was that i knew my rights. e.g. i knew when tests that weren’t handed back on time would expire. our mom had to run to school almost every day to listen about how horrible their sons were.
JB: when i was in fifth class, teachers used to mob me saying stuff like “you think you’re something better than the rest because your dad is Uwe Ochsenknecht.”
WG: yeah, teachers used to yell at us a lot, i even got nine reprimands in one week once. shortly before they threw me out once and for all, i quit school

Che Guevara used to be a teenage idol back in the days- who’s your hero now?

Tom: when we still used to go clubbing, a lot of people wore Che Guevara shirts. there were a lot of demonstrations going on around us, also started by punks, so rebellion was definitely a major topic back then.
WG: i used to stand together with about 3.000 punks on the Marienplatz to demonstate against the NPD (note: the neo-nazi party in germany). but overall, there’s not a whole lot of reasons to demonstate against stuff in germany. if i was living in the USA, i could think of thousands of reasons but over here?

are there any politicians you have a liking for?

Bill: i don’t talk about stuff like that. i don’t want to manipulate anyone by my personal decision or my choice of voting. everyone’s gotta have their own opinion.
Tom: but we definitely do vote, since we’re finally 18 and all. (note: good boys. )
WG: the parties can go to war against each other for all i care. when i turn 18, i’m definitely gonna go to vote and then i’ll also inform myself properly about it. now i got different idols, like the musician Tom Morello for example (note: guitarist of Rage against the Machine). he is playing for free during demonstrations to support good causes. he doesn’t care for the money but for the cause.

you were born directly into the era Kohl. do you remember him?
(note: Helmut Kohl: german chansellor (CDU) until 1998 – http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Helmut_Kohl)

Tom: *shapes a pear with his hand* the kinda big guy?

and Gerhard Schröder?
(note: G. Schröder: german chansellor (SPD) following Kohl until 2005 – http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gerhard_Schr%C3%B6der)

WG: hm, SPD?
Tom: *laughs* yeah, i’d have known that too.

your generation was branded by cold war, tschernobyl, forest-death and atom-energy. what was the major happenings, the turning points of your youth?

WG: certainly sept. 11th, but mostly what happened afterwards. i’ve been watching a lot of documentaries about the attack on the WTC and i realized: in the end, the americans beat themselves with their own weapons since they enabled Bin Laden in the first place. that’s when i realized how the world nowadays is working and that America is the world-police who’s butting in into everyone’s business. on the one side, i’m sure they want to help but on the other hand, they want to get the biggest possible profit out of it at the same time. germany is a lot more laid back about all that, they do whatever they think is right and don’t let themselves get dragged into all kinds of shit.
Bill: of course a lot of stuff happened during our childhood that we think about, mainly of course sept. 11th. still, we try not to let our fears block us.

can you imagine joining the army and maybe even go to Afghanistan to help re-build the country again?

JB: no way. i’m just so lazy. always being on edge, giving 100%, that’d be way too stressful for me. i’m going to be doing social service for sure. i’d be nothing but scared in Afghanistan, that’s so not my cup of tea.
WG: the army turned me down already due to my funnel chest. but the army wouldn’t me my thing anyway, i’d rather stay by my friends and help out in social homes or handicapped homes.
Tom: we’ll think about that when we’re invited to the medical examination for the military service.

how do you like to live when you get older?

Tom: like the Stones. i want to be standing on stage all my life.
Bill: i’d like to have my own label one day and a flat in another country. still: my roots are in germany and i always want to come back here.
JB: i’d like to be a fashion designer one day. maybe i’ll get that out of my two years at the Waldorf-School. (note: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Waldorf_school)
WG: i’d like to have a gigantic company that produces all kinds of stuff: movies, music, furniture, fashion and condoms.

can you still remember the first time you’ve heard from each other?

JB: i read about Tokio Hotel in the Bravo.
WG: a couple of years ago, a friend gave me a CD from you guys and said: look, that’s a new german band. i liked it, i can still remember that.
Bill: well, we saw a movie with you guys and we noticed that you’re about the same age as us of course. you pay more attention then when you notice that and check out the people more.
WG: when i first saw a picture of Tokio Hotel, i thought: wow, those are freaks.

WG, 17, and JB, 15, are the sons of the german actor Uwe Ochsenknecht. they have been playing the lead roles in the movies “Die Wilden Kerle 1-4″. furthermore, JB is releasing his first album “Mission Blue”, the single “I’m lovin’ (l.r.h.p.)” has been in the Top 10 for weeks.
