Rockers Tokio Hotel happy to pump up the volume
by Christopher Toh 05:55 AM Jul 29, 2010

The last time German rockers Tokio Hotel were in town, they played an acoustic showcase – a far cry from Humanoid City, the ballsy show they’ve been touring recently. This time round, when Tokio Hotel return to our shores for Singfest, they promise to rock out – albeit on a smaller scale than Humanoid City.

“We will have a full electric show, but we won’t be able to bring the whole set for Humanoid City,” said Tokio Hotel singer Bill Kaulitz over the phone. “But it’s going to be a great show anyway.”

What do you expect this time?

We expect great weather. And great audiences. Well, you know, we’d rather see the fans one-to-one than just read about them or hear about them on the Internet. This time we can see them face-to-face and see their reactions and emotions. That’s always a great thing. So we’re excited.

Bill Kaulitz

Did you see much of Singapore and try the local food last time?

The schedule was really, really tough the last time, so we didn’t see the whole city and all our fans, but it was fantastic. We just ate pasta, pizza and things like that. Maybe we’ll get to try some this time.

Brothers in a band aren’t always a good idea. Look at Oasis. How well do you get along with Tom?

I think because we’re identical twins, it’s a little different. There’s a connection there, it’s something special. We’re like one person – can’t live without each other. I mean, we have fights sometimes, but five minutes later, we’ll forget about it. Tommy and me, we’ve done everything together our whole lives. It’s an enormous thing for us to be in the same band and doing all this together.

You guys were teens when you started. Any advice for young bands?

It’s hard in the beginning, especially if you are very young, with people talking sh** about you. But when you’re doing good music at 15 … that’s a good thing. To be successful, though, it’s a lot of luck – you have to be at the right place at the right time. And a lot of hard work. We made the decision and we just wanted to go for it and do music our whole lives. We didn’t care what happened. It’s important to keep that goal in mind to go professional.

So you didn’t think to do anything else after school?

Tom and me, we started to make music when we were seven. After school, we went directly into the rehearsal room. There was never a Plan B. If we weren’t picked up by the label, I think we could have been homeless musicians, maybe. We would play anywhere – in front of five or in front of thousands. But it’s better to play in front of thousands! We are really lucky to have this life. I feel really blessed.

Tokio Hotel perform at Singfest on Aug 3. Tickets at $175 from Sistic. Packages available. Details at www.sistic.com.sg.

AWWWWW I LOVE THESE GUYS TO PIECES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
They never cease to amaze me with their awesomeness and their love and passion for what they do. They better get their butts over to America; they need to feel the love here!
I loved how Bill called Tom “Tommy” and how no matter what happens they’ll still have that amazing connection. Gotta love identical twins! :)
Also, I love how the magazine called Humanoid City a “ballsy show.” They were right though- it took a lotta balls to pull off something as spectacular as that! ;)

“Tommy and me, we’ve done everything together our whole lives” awww!!!!!!!! like others here, i love it when he says tommy <33333 " I think we could have been homeless musicians, maybe. We would play anywhere – in front of five or in front of thousands" see, i have no dout that they would be doing that. because this band is not superfishal, and they are not about the fame, they are about the MUSIC!!!! and the playing infront of 5 people, that part has realy ispired me. before tokio hotel i wouldnt do anything unless i new i would be good and suced at it, no mater how bad i wanted to do something if i new i couldnt get it right i wouldnt do it. but they have showed me to follow my dreams!!!!!! now i do what i want to do no matter what, and i would do it even if no one liked it or if i stunk/stink at it!!!!!! they have changed me for the better <333333333 they have truly inspired me!!!!!!!!

I love how Bill -or should I say Tokio Hotel- is so passionate about music that they would rather play for five audiences than have a Plan B. That’s dedication right there, and it shows how much they appreciate the fans support and they’re not taking any of their fame and fortune for granted. Bless them :].

I share your sentiments Vanessa. I’ve never been one who’s a big fan of anything, till the first time I listened to World Behind My Wall (yep, first Tokio Hotel song I ever heard, and still my all time fav) and found out about them. Now these guys occupy every bit of my life everyday. In a good way of course. Bless these talented boys! <3

Dude, I found them by accident…BEST ACCIDENT I’VE EVER MADE (that didn’t end in the hospital for a change) god im soooooo happy that guitar hero brought us together…yup, guitar hero…accidentaly hit the wrong song and ended up likeing them so much that I looked em up and here I am 9 months later (and $365) with a shrine of TH as well as a lifesize poster of all of em, a lifesize poster of gusti <3, a 4ft poster of "bendy bill", 23 other TH posters, 14 tee shirts, 2 pairs of earrings, 3 bracelets, 10 guitar pic necklaces, a $65 humanoid sweatshirt that I almost passed out in by wearing it in the middle of the summer, a TH phone charm, and all the other stuff I don't feel like typing XD

wow. I wish I could have all that stuff of them, but there’s barely anything of Tokio Hotel in the US. All I have is 3 shirts and the calendar.

I’m really happy that the guys stuck to what they loved and I’m happy that they found eachother because without any of them, there wouldn’t be a Tokio Hotel. I’m really great-full to have Tokio Hotel in my life.

Ebay is a great place to shop for Tokio Hotel items! I have almost every CD and got most of them from Ebay. Most are from foreign sellers, so the shipping can be pricey. Well worth it though! I even have the Der Letzte Tag maxi cd’s 1&2! Those are pretty hard to come by in the US!
