Thanks to xander for finding this. Thought many of you might find this interesting. It really is a grim picture for newer artists in the United States, such as Tokio Hotel. On the other hand, Tokio Hotel did a lot better in the USA than many other artists (91% of the others at least), so that is something we can be proud about. It’s a rough world right now for musicians and if we knew what the magic bullet was, we would sure as hell use it to catapult Tokio Hotel into the level of success they deserve here.
The Latest Startling Stats Out of NARM…
Monday, May 17, 2010NARM (National Association of Recording Merchandisers) has traditionally been a sales-focused conference, and over the weekend, plenty of stats were being bandied about. At a top level, the downward decline in physical sales remains obvious, though this is an industry pondering a very complicated puzzle. Instead of consumers walking away, engagement is higher than ever before, just not across paid channels.
Hence, the vexing riddle. How do artists, labels, and the broader industry take advantage of this enormous demand, most of which is being satisfied for free? And, how does anyone launch a career in such a super-saturated market?
On that last question, Nielsen Soundscan offered some sobering stats. A total of 98,000 albums were released in 2009, and just a handful crossed the million-mark. Perhaps more sobering, just 2.1 percent managed to cross the 5,000-mark, a group that made up 91 percent of total sales. Suddenly, fresh artists are staring at a near-zero chance of selling even modest amounts, part of a continued drizzle on DIY optimism.

Well, if every fan around Internet is going to talk about it, promoting this garbage, of course it will never die. And when Tom will address this in any form than we will know the truth. Until then, yeah, stop talking about it…

I love to have an actual CD in my hands, specially TH CD. But as long downloads are legal, (Amazon, iTunes…) and as long as money from it are going to artist, I have no problems with downloads instead of physical CD. Especially, if it also counts toward the total sales of the albums… Who cares how you bought the album as long as you BOUGHT it!

When “Darkside of the sun” comes out, I am planning to request the song to every radio station and music channel I know, to make them play Tokio Hotel’s music! Tokio Hotel gets way to little exposure in the US and we as their fans have to do something about that! Are you with me?

Actually the people they pay for promotion and their label are responsible for getting them known. We as fans can only do so much.

People need to quit stealing music. Bottom line. It’s wrong. You might as well be stealing money out of their pockets. It’s pathetic. I can’t do that…especially to artists that I adore like Tokio Hotel.

They are all using the quote Bild had originally released so I wouldn’t say that these sources are any better, but I found these on Yahoo.

How do you know it was Tom who commented on it? i wont believe anything in writing cuz anybody could have written it. right? I’ll believe it if Tom comments in an interview or something of that sort. If he doesn’t, I’ll choose to forget about all this crap.

Yahoo news took the story from BILD.de. who was first to post it.
I surely hope that you don’t consider Bild as reliable sourse, do you??????? Now, stop spreading that nonsense…

I bought every version of Humanoid, every version of Scream, only 1 of Zimmer =[ and both versions of Schrei. Plus I have 3 of Caught on Camera, every t-shirt out there, plus the bracelets and necklaces and everything I can get ahold of. Especially from stores in the US like hot topic. I bought a $15 poster of TH at FYI and was so excited that it was at an American store. So I was willing to buy it even though I didn’t have room. Whenever I go on itunes I make sure to search TH just so the people at itunes can see people are searching them. It’s so sad. The US needs TH. I for one am planning on (when their next single is released) calling all the radio stations I can and requesting it. Emailing VH1 and MTV and tell them to play their videos.

Artists need us to buy the albums. The reality is that they make their money from concerts and endorsements. As a consumer, you need to support them in all areas through the T-shirt sales and tickets, etc. – of course, as your money allows.
It’s a tough business, but remember TH has managed to climb out of the box and kick open doors. Don’t let these dismal statistics slow you down. We will crack the U.S. market, yet.

After seeing alot of record stores closing, I believe that there will be no need for cd’s anymore. Most people download everything, records, movies, etc..

I still like CDs better. Its just something about having a CD and the artwork and everything that comes with it that you can’t get with a download.

I used to listen to music illegal before. When I discovered Tokio Hotel 3 years ago, that changed. Now I understand how important it is to pay the artist for the music. Now I give a copy of the Humanoid album to everybody I know as a birthdaypresent or christmaspresent. I, myself, have 4 copys of the album.
There is a petition going around in the fandom now. You guys remember that their latest single was a dowload sinlge, right? Well, there is a possibility that the same thing will happen to “Darkside of the sun”. This is not up to the guys, but because some people say the singles doesn’t sell enough copys. We as their fans have to tell them that we wan’t to hold a copy in our hands and not another download sinlge with this petition. I can’t post links here, so try find the petition on twit(t)er or something.

It’s more exciting to actually buy the CDs, but more often (except with TH) I just buy the singles because a lot of the songs on CDs are terrible fillers. It is a tough market.

I was just talking to my husband about this over the weekend when I was cleaning out our CD/DVD cabinet. I have 5 versions of Humanoid alone, three of Scream, two of Zimmer, and one of Schrei-So Laut Du Kannst! He asked why I had to buy the same CD so much and I told him because I need to support the artist. Do I think it’s stupid and easier to buy one copy of the CD then download the bonus ones for free instead of buying a whole nother album for one song? Yes. But It’s showing support. Pretty soon, if we keep up that crap, we won’t have any more CDs TO buy, because there will be no demand!

If it means keeping Tokio Hotel alive in the United States, I’d buy every single CD. They deserve super-star status in the U.S! They work so hard and are so amazing! Forget stupid ‘Bieber Fever’, there should be ‘Tokio Hotel Fever’…I know I’ve got it.

Yes, it’s so important that we Tokio Hotel fans show our support in the most basic way possible, by BUYING their music.
Music sales tell the band where they have fans.
If you are illegally downloading TH music, you’re hurting the band, and you’re hurting your chances of ever seeing them play live in your country, in your city.

Oh, this is awful! Me myself I love having a CD in my hand and then putting it on my MP3 player. I would hate it if they start just selling digital music, I think that would be so sad. It was a sad day when they start closing the record stores that we all loved going into to see all the CDs and artist. A very sad day indeed to see all of it gone.

Just also wanted to say, I never download music for free and don’t allow my daughter to. That is not fair to the artist and their music. Whom ever does this should be ashamed. These artist have to make money to keep the music going and it helps with their tours! Thanks.
