Italian Vanity Fair – In Bed with Tokio Hotel

Tagged With: ,

Tokio Hotel has a four page spread in the Italian Vanity Fair. The issue date is March 24, 2010 and Robert Pattinson is on the cover. The article is titled “In Bed with Tokio Hotel”. We are waiting to hear from Magazine Cafe to find out if they will have this one, but many Barnes and Noble stores seem to carry the Italian Magazines. You can stay ahead of ordering information on the fanclub forum about buying, that thread is on fire right now.

Magazine Cafe WILL carry this magazine.
Here is the link

We also not have a translation yet, but when we get it, it will be posted here. Enjoy the scans.

Translation follows. It is quite negative.

In bed with Tokio Hotel
The German band who drives little girls crazy (but for how long?) is coming to Italy on tour. Guess where we interviewed them?

Hands up anyone who remembers a Tokio Hotel song. If you attend middle school you’ll probably be appalled right now since you know by heart every single word. If you are older than 15, you’ll be perplexed. At most someone could sing “na-na-na-na monsoon”. If you belong to the first group you’re impatiently waiting for one of the next four Italian gigs. If you belong to the second one, prepare yourself to see well-known scenes in the newscast: little girls screaming for four guys in their twenties (one with make-up and a strange haircut, one with braids who looks like a rapper, one with short hair and one with long hair).

They are Tokio Hotel, the German band who’ve sold the most records during the last few years (three millions of albums sold all over the world, 700.000 just with the most recent one, Humanoid, released last October). Even if insiders say that the band’s popularity is dwindling (the four dates are not sold out like two years ago), even if the American Rolling Stone has reviewed their new album saying that it is “melodically anemic and strangely low-key”, even if Google Trends (a feature which provides insights into broad search patterns on web) testifies that the search of the word “Tokio Hotel” is decreasing and even if on Facebook the group called “this aubergine has more fans than Tokio Hotel” has accomplished its mission – the four boys from Magdeburg are still conquering thousands of infatuated teenagers who are ready for anything.

The boys fit their roles perfectly. When we meet them in a luxurious hotel suite, Bill Kaulitz – the singer – enters, greets, comes to an halt, widens his legs and he starts posing in front of the photographer with a continuous change of facial expressions (enigmatic stare – a little less enigmatic stare – cryptic stare – a little less cryptic stare) – even Ben Stiller in Zoolander can’t do better! Too bad the photographer is still maneuvering with flashes and computers. The manager tells Bill that the photoshoot is yet to start. Bill says “Ok” and heads toward the make-up artist (Nathalie) who retouches his foundation.

In the meantime – knowing that Nathalie plays a key role for the band thanks to her skills with hairspray, blush and pencils – we ask her how long she has been working with Tokio Hotel. She moves away laughing and ending the conversation with a “No comment”, “It’s a secret”, “It’s a mystery”. As if it were the fourth secret of Fatima… I’m told it’s normal. An urban legend tells that she had a relationship with Bill – someone denies it and says this is just a covering for his alleged homosexuality which would let his young female fans down, whereas others say it’s true but he doesn’t admit it for the same reason, namely not to disappoint his fans. After all, in every single interview it’s told that he is looking for a girl to fall in love with, Tom falls for a different girl every night, Gustav is single and Georg is the only one who’s had a girlfriend, for a year.

After the photoshoot – which they undergo with seriousness and compliance, with a German-Japanese attitude which fits their name – they lie down on a double bed in the room next door. They invite me to sit with them and to make the interview on the mattress every fan would kill for.

Bill, you’re the girls’ idol, but the songwriter of your lyrics as well. The second single, World Behind My Wall, says: “Wanna wake up in a dream”. How is your world behind the façade?
Bill: A very lucky world. I’ve got a family, my four dogs, my brother Tom, the band and my job. But at the same time it’s difficult to find the same happiness in the world outside – I realize mine is quite an ecceptional case.

Your album is called Humanoid, on its cover there’s a Bill-robot and in many songs you underline this theme: you’re not robots, but people with a heart.
Bill: Many people just looked at the cover and thought that we wanted to play “robots”. Honestly, we thought to name the album like this because we feel like “humanoids”, i.e. “human-like”. We feel strange, different. In Alien I sing “There’s an alien in me”, but – to be honest – I’m singing about the search of love, about the union with your other half. In every song we talk about emotions and childhood memories, we’re sentimental and totally human.

Talking about aliens, you have said you believe in Martians.
Bill: I believe in many things, even if I don’t follow a specific religion. I’m sure that there’s life beyond death or on other planets. And I strongly believe in fate. Me and my brother doing this job was written in fate, we’ve loved music since we were kids.

Apart from yours, what music do you like? Where does your inspiration come from?
Tom: I like Stereophonics.
Gustav: I listen to Metallica. But on the right calf I have tattooed a sentence by Johnny Cash, whom I really like.

And?
Tom: You know, honestly, we’ve got little time to listen to music. We’re always on the road playing our music and at the end of the day our ears can’t take any more.

Do you ever have any breaks?
Bill: Never. Actually, even reading a book or a magazine is impossible.

Talking about readings, Bill, you left middle school. Aren’t you interested in learning something more?
Bill: I’ve not taken a diploma because at that time I was already writing our first album and I don’t know if I’ll ever take the diploma. Now I’m Tokio Hotel frontman, that’s what I’m doing and I have a lot of fun.
Tom:
I don’t feel like getting one right now, I’m not interested. But I assure you we can write, read and count.
Gustav: I’ve taken my diploma in professional studies through an online-school. Maybe one day I’ll continue my studies… But at the moment we’re focused on the band, you know. It’s like our dream has finally come true and we want to carry it out. For our fans, too.

Gustav, last year you were attacked in a club, whereas Tom allegedly punched a girl who asked him for an autograph. What’s happening to you?
Gustav: It seems incredible, but even I get recognized like a Tokio Hotel member. That’s why that night a guy in a club wanted to express how little he liked the band – let’s put it like that – and he smashed a beer mug on my head.
Tom: As in my case, lot of lies have been written. I’ve never hit a woman. Actually, I’ve had an argument with somebody on my way back home. However, they weren’t fans asking for an autograph, but girls I knew and they didn’t exactly have good intentions. You know, it was a private matter. This is also the proof we can’t go out without bodyguards, even when we’re not working.

Well, to avoid being assaulted, now you should…
Bill: Set your heart at rest: we’re not going to give up.

In an earlier post, I said I’d ask my Italian friend (also an older TH fan) to check out the magazine and compare it with the translation here. No offense intended to whomever actually translated but sometimes things do get ‘lost in translation’ as it were. Apparently, this wasn’t the case…

So, no surprise, she hated the ‘very disagreeable’ article. And unfortunately, the attitude was ‘very typical of Italian journalists: aggressive and sarcastic with a mocking superiority. It seems TH wasn’t the only band subjected to this poor treatment, but of course this brings to mind their treatment at the show in San Remo…but how bad for Vanity Fair to pick on the the wrong band and the wrong fans to p*ss off!

ok so i read the article and then some comments that really made me look at the article diffrently.
so why exactly are they talking about them graduating school and all? thats was a lonng time ago. there is no exusible reason for being suck a d!ck to poeple you dont know personaly. really this article writer is soo un profesional who bashes on someone that much in such a short time? presonaly if i was the persons boss i would fire their ass. only ile 1/3 of the article was the acctual interview and im really confuzed aboute the whole thing that they walk in and do a photoshoot are they talking aboute in the hotel or what because next thing you know their on a hotel room bed doing an interview. this person attacs their charactor looks what they do their music the fans EVERYTHING.
but it could also be that way just because they want people to read it and they might tink that this is the best way to get it..? idk just guessing

like the pictures though(kinda feels wierd to leave off on a good note…)

    Aloha Gang,
First of all they did graduate in ’09 with elite scores and awards in excellence. Whose to know if they haven’t already completed further college level courses via online like Gustav. Higher education is paid for via the German system due to the taxes they all pay. I know they have until 25 to utilize those opportunities. Since, the got super high scores due to genius level intelligence, that is a definite possibility.
Regarding this article, it seems misleading as the top introduction doesn’t coincide with the “In Bed with TH” idea. I bet the guys were just tired and appreciated the moment to rest during an interview. Then, Bill posing automatically is par for the course, he “knows” he is on display. They would pick on him if he didn’t do that. HELLO!
Hey! Let’s all just take this one for what it’s worth. The PICs are FAB! Besides it will help them get noticed and cause exactly this reaction. Isn’t that all good. They did put them with the whole Twilight fetish fans and most people will only note the look of them rather then the bullshit.
The last note, I think. The last time I checked in order to receive “Platinum” awards, an artist or group of artists must sell 1 million copies. Therefore, this idiot interviewer didn’t even do their homework.
THEY RECEIVED PLATINUM in ITALY along with MEXICO, and GERMANY and I believe GOLD in FRANCE which means ummmm……. let me see if I can count like Tom. over 3.5 million sold just in these countries alone. Don’t forget that doesn’t include North America, other European countries like Norway, Sweden, Netherlands, UK, Poland, and more. Plus, there is South America and Asia, since they have proven to have fans in China, Japan and South Korea. Then, oh yeah, downunder in Aussieland. Hmmmm…what does that count go up to Tomi?
P.S. Ever check out the fan sites, artwork with them as the subjects? (Caution there is lots of twncest.*wink*) However, the point is that those writers and artists are 20 somethings and older, not to exclude the fact that the “boys” do in fact drive many teens absolutely crazy.

    • Justfan says:

rate this comment Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

Actually every country has different numbers of records to sold for disc to become platinum. In States it’s 1 million copies, in Britain it’s 600 000 copies. In Germany it’s 200 000 copies.

Why the hell would this person make an interview for an obviously popular band in their country only to smash it to pieces? This sounds like it was written by someone who was a fan for two months and then decided that Tokio Hotel sucked. The information is not at all accurate in some places. I hate when ignorant people write Tokio Hotel interviews.

In response to the age thing: A few weeks ago I was helping my mom scrub down the diningroom walls. She asked me if I’d like to hear some music while we worked (we always have music on when we clean) and I said, ‘Sure, put on whatever you want.’

She put on my Humanoid CD and started singing along to Automatic.

When we talk about Tokio Hotel (which we do) she calls them ‘The boys’ and we both know exactly who she means.

Today, when I was actually discussing this particular article with her, she compared TH to The Beatles.

My mom is 54 years old and awesome. <3

To assume that only middle schoolers like tokio hotel is ignerant.
People of all ages like them.
Maybe the interviewer should go to a th concert and see for himself. Ridiculous. Im glad that Tom and Gustav stuck up for themselves.
Bringing up their schooling is also ignerant. I mean not every rockstar had finished school. You dont have to have a diploma to make and write amazing music. A diploma is not one of their priorities at the moment.
I understand that everyone is entitled to their own oppinion. But th doesn’t deserve it.

Everyone is getting very upset here, but I read the interview last night and well, it’s rather peculiar.

Magazines usually plan and do their interviews months in advance of publishing. Photos aren’t always done at the same time and these photos are post-Dsquared but some of the questions seem old and feel out of place, time-wise.

For example, the part about Bill and Tom leaving Middle School. Correct me if I’m wrong but that is not the same as High/Secondary School is it? But I saw this earlier this month:

    http://www.buzznet.com/tags/billkaulitz/journals/3810621/pressportalde-youth-prize-distance-trained/

Now, I haven’t read all the posts, but am surprised that no one has mentioned this already. Bill and Tom graduated in 2009 via long distance studies and not only that got an award for outstanding grades. In German, schools rate grades from 1 to 6, with 1 being the best and the boys achieved a 1.8!

So…if this is the case, I have to wonder…how old is this interview and from how many sources was it culled from??

Just some things to consider before anyone else here get needlessly upset at this ridiculous interview. I have an Italian friend who is also a big fan and will get her to look for this magazine.

I’m always blown away by how well the boys handle difficult, rude people…with more poise, diplomacy, and humor than the interviewer by far! Oh, and music doesn’t have an age attached to it. I’m 45 and i’ve loved their music since i first heard it a couple years ago. It’s just good music and songwriting, plain and simple! okay sorry to point it out like this but you guys have got to get over th haters, do you guys know these boys personally? no
how do you know the same th that we see on camera is the same one that interveiwers see you don’t so don’t go bashing some one for haveing a different opinion what Im wondering is why the admin would put the article up considering its basicly bashing the band thats being promoted

    • Schnee says:

I DID not put it up because I agree with it or support it. Just making that clear.

    • Misa Sugar says:

rate this comment Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

To be fair, the article scans were posted before they had a translation, for one thing. For another thing, if there’s an article about TH, we will want to read it whether it’s good or bad. It’s not the admin’s job to censor out the stuff that might offend us. It’s not posted because anyone on the staff agrees with it, it’s posted so we can read it for ourselves and make our own judgments about it.

Basically, whether it’s negative or not, we still want access to stuff like this, and that is what this website is for.

And one last thing. Just because we don’t know the boys personally, does not give ANY interviewer the right to write such a nasty and unprofessional article. This is a magazine, not a gossip blog, and I would expect much more professional and less opinion-based content.

I suspect that what happened was this: the photographer calls Bill over to do some test shots first, but with the language barrier it appears otherwise. Oh this is ridiculous! Whoever wrote this is completely ignorant of the line between healthy critique and hate-writing. They just kept playing off of rumors that were already proven false and the part about the fans’ average age was a straight up lie. Also that last question about Tom and the stalker was completely uncalled for. It’s been resolved and he must just want to leave it behind him. (honestly when faced with his situation the majority of people would probably have reacted the same, or worse. Just because he’s famous, anything he does ‘wrong’ is ten times worse) and whoever it was basically called Bill a homosexual idiot (nothing wrong with homosexuals, just paraphrasing) A lot of extremely successful celebrities never finished high school, and in some cases, elementry school (like Mark Twain, I believe, didn’t). This article was foolish and a waste if the boys’ time, but I immensely admire how they handled the reporter’s immature questions and comments. That women has a serious superiority complex with no grounds to put it on.

Sorry for the lengthy comment. And by the way, I’m 14 and by no means a ‘little girl’. I’m ten times more mature than the majority of seniors in my high school (and that actually is a proven fact, by tests and observation, not just an opinion)

And I started listening to Tokio hotel when they came over here at 18 to do some concerts in the u.s.I was 23..and i’m 25 now.. Let’s not forget the over 60 crowd. When I was I was in High School, the 4 boys from Liverpool reigned the rock world. The first time I heard TH I was immediately taken with the music. I thought it was brilliant. I wanted to know more, so I did a little investigation. These young men are extraordinary songwriters and they are such nice guys. They have a great sense of humor and, to be so grounded at such a young age, is a testiment to just how incredibly special they are. This girl obviously had an ax to grind and I was thrilled when Bill put her in her place. You go, Honey!! You don’t have to take that crap from anyone!!

Did they actually go “lie down” on a bed with the interviewer? lol I can’t picture this.

This interview rides so much on rumor and gossip it’s not even funny.

However, some POSITIVE points (for me) that I’d like to highlight:
    -B&W photos ftw!
-Bill feeling lucky, and mentioning his brother being part of his lucky world as a separate entity, even from family = so sweet
-Tom liking Stereophonics now, even though it was Bill who said it before. (Twin agreement/transference = cuteness)
-Gustav edumacating himself online = good for him!
-Gustav being surprised about someone recognizing him = so humble
-Tom handling the intrusive question about the alleged violence so well = nice & professional
-And finally, Bill not giving up at the end = Boo yaaa!

I agree that the interviewer was being a little catty but I also think that these are the kinds of things that people who read vogue want to read about. I think that these interviews are meant for just the fans to read but to captivate the average person as well.

Ironically enough I introduced my niece who is 14 to Tokio Hotel we went to the Denver concert together in ‘08, and then my nephews twins 9 are in love with Alien they are too CUTE!
Anyways back to the point I have been a fan for a few years now and it offends me when people make asinine comments about our boys.I am always thrilled to hear about Tokio Hotel in a magazine thats not bop or tiger beat or j-14 but it sucks when people thinks it’s okay to bash an awesome band to sell magazines to TH haters.

I really hate the fact that many magazines think that they only have fans who are teens.
i know for sure that there are many fans that aren’t teens
i can’t believe they actually write those type os stupid things! ugh! >:(

For some strange reason I feel personally offended when someone prints
such a nasty, snarky article about TH. The nerve of some people…
Whoever wrote that piece would be amazed at how many women over the age of 40, like myself, LOVE Tokio Hotel!!
    Rock on!!!!

That interviewer was sort of an A-hole. I’m 42. I love their music. Who cares what Bill is…and they will always be a successful band.

im gonna put this nicely, who ever wrote this article i very much dislike.not every one who likes TH isnt in middle school.srrly this interviewer didnt deserve to do an interview w/ them.and the part about bills s–uallity is completely uncalled for.he is straight he has said this many times.gosh this angered me.but the pic of bill smiling is cute.

But then again, you have to remember that this magazine isnt aimed towards teens or young adults, which most TH fans *are*. It’s aimed towards more mature adults. I’m playing Devil’s Advocate, and I’m tired of hearing TH fans call the waaah~bulance everytime someone says something not positive about TH.

the “waaah~bulance”? really? are you even a fan? cause you don’t sound like one. and i don’t think that “most” TH fans are teenagers either. i’m 30 years old. and i love Tokio Hotel.

Your point doesn’t make sence. The fact that Vanity Fair is aimed at adults is not the reason to write, basicly, Internet blog type of an an article with bunch of rumors about Bill and prejustices towards female fans. Or reason to show Bill as a dumm dumm idiot who can not see if the photoshoot started. Stern and GQ magazine, politics and lifestyle respectivly, are aimed at very high educated adult readers. But compare to VF Italy they actually put together thoughtful and interesting interviews. Seems like those two magazines respect their readers much more, because they trust their readers and let them judge twins and Bill by themselves.

I’m 19, and I usually enjoy reading Vanity Fair..english versions of course, and they’re usually very thoughtful and interesting. I’ve never read an article that took such a crude angle. I’m disappointed in italian Vanity Fair. That journalist should get fired. He was obviously too narrow-minded and superficial, not to mention a crap writer, to even be allowed to interview the boys and write about something as amazing as tokio hotel. absolute.

29, three kids! I got involved with Tokio Hotel when I was pregnant with my twin boys, Searched twin names on google and found the band. Their music was amazing! My 30 year old best friend and AI have seen them TWICE. So take them, rude disrespectful reporter.

I’m just saying cuz she said middle schoolers. I actually know a ton of “Tokio Moms”, who are my age, younger, AND older, all with kids, and all fans. So you know what? I don’t care. I love Tokio Hotel, and I hope that the haters will always have to MAKE UP SHIT AND EMBELLISH OPINION. Because so far, none of the hating EVER has been based on facts or reasons. It’s just been on stupid petty thngs with no backing. And I’m glad.

Really guys? It’s someones opinion. You’re talking about a high class gossip magazine. And honestly, sometimes people think that way. its an opinion. if you don’t like it, pay no mind to it.

I am sure reporter was very disappointed with the last answer:

“VF: Well, to avoid being assaulted, now you should…
Bill: Set your heart at rest: we’re not going to give up”

BRILLIANT, Bill!!! Put this bitch to her place. TH is not going to give up!!! That was the best ending for this article. I got the feeling guys felt the negativity of the reporter towards them. And Tom with his sarcastic “I can assure you we can write, read and count”!!!

And yes, its shame that such a beautiful photo spread was followed by such a piece of garbage article…

You know what really makes me smile, though?
The fact that this interviewer is probably in their late 20’s or early 30’s, and he/she is insulting Tokio Hotel like a 13 year old,
And our boys are sitting there, being as wise and polite as adults should.
And you know what makes that smile even bigger?
How you guys are standing up for them, no matter the age, being wise and very sure. I bet if this interviewer saw all this, they’d want to go crawl under a rock and die.

    :)
