Turning Japanese
Despite naming themselves after the Japanese capital, German rock band Tokio Hotel knows zilch about the Japanese culture, so says its androgynous frontman Bill Kaulitz.
8 DAYS: You guys were originally known as Devilish. Why the name change?
BILL KAULITZ: We were really young and just thought Devilish sounded cool and a little bit devil. But it was a stupid name. When we went pro, we wanted a name which makes sense. ‘Hotel’ represents our dreams: to perform around the world, living in hotels. ‘Tokio’ is obviously from ‘Tokyo’, which represents something far away that we’ve never been to, but would like to visit some day. Plus it is a cool city name.
8 DAYS: Are you guys Nippon-philes?
BILL KAULITZ: We don’t really know that much about Japanese culture. All I know is the young people there are kind of crazy when it comes to style and fashion. We recorded our first English single, ‘Monsoon’, in Japanese. It was really hard. I had a coach – a Japanese girl – in the studio, and I didn’t know what I was singing. I just learnt the sounds of the words.
8 DAYS: Bill, with that big hair and make-up, have you ever been mistaken for a girl?
BILL KAULITZ: It’s a normal reaction for people to think that I’m gay or feminine. I’m not bothered at all. I like to play with such rumours. This is my style, my personality. And by the way, I’m straight.
8 DAYS: Are you like this at home?
BILL KAULITZ: I’ve been like this since I was 10 in school. But now our lives have changed completely. In my private time I try to go incognito, so no make-up.
8 DAYS: Are you single because you can’t find a girl prettier than you?
BILL KAULITZ: (Laughs) I believe in true love. I don’t have much free time to spend with someone really important. I’ve been single since I was 15. Maybe I’ll find my big love in 2010.

Okay I’m Singaporean btw, but I’ve always found 8 Days to be a little insensitive with their questions. Not dissing my own local mag, but hey, some of these questions could be asked a little nicer or something.

I never thought he was a girl. He has what most people would consider to be feminine qualities, but I think his androgyny is beautiful and exotic. He reminds me of a gorgeous anime character brought to life. ^_^

When I first saw Bill, I admit, I thought he looked a little feminine. Dont kill me please *hides behind flying sporks and rocks* But it was a small picture, so i couldnt really tell. But when I found out more about him, I never thought that he would be german, but i never thought he was asian. o-o

I thought he looked a tiny bit Asian, but honestly, I didn’t think he looked like a girl. =3 of course, in some pictures he looks a little feminine, but overall…nahh XD though I do think that he’s too beautiful to be human o_O’

Im glad hes not bothered by it..it would make me terribly sad if he were. And I love how he and Tom prove stereotypes are just a bunch of bullpoop (yes thats a word.) How funny! I was just talking to a friend about that the other day. I don’t think he CAN find a girl that is prettier than him! Even if he did, would it really work out? Actually a friend of mine thought Bill was
Japanese. She listened to Japanese rock
and I guess Tokio Hotel came up in one
of her searches. She saw me wearing a
TH t-shirt and asked me about them. I gave
her the 411 on TH and I had to keep
repeating that they were German. You
have to admit that Bill could be mistaken
for Japanese because of the lion mane
and make up. She liked Scream and
Humanoid but she prefers Tom over Bill.

I totally thought he was HALF asian w/ those eyes and that hair, and I was probably influenced by their band name, like his momma was japanese and his daddy was polish or something (forgive me, I first heard ‘in die nacht’ and didn’t even recognize what language it was, that’s how little exposure I’d had to german back then!)

I remember the first time I discovered that they did a “japanese” version of monsoon, I was sitting here thinking “wow they did the whole song in japanese??” but it’s the whole thing minus the chorus.
