Bill Kaulitz – Arthur Interview

October 30, 2009

Okay, I know this is difficult, so feel free to look at all the wonderful pictures and then come back for the reading part. That is what a lot of us had to do. Bill has done an interview about his latest voice part in Arthur und die Minimoys.

Do you still remember your reaction when you first saw the first part of Arthur and the Minimoys in the cinema, and heard your voice?

I had to get used there first of all to hearing my own voice. I do not like this since, actually, at all. Just, so, I was very critical of course what concerns my work on the film. However, after a while I was also really proud and thought only: ” Wow! ” I remembered immediately the days in the synchronous studio and how much work was this. But I just still knew exactly how much fun has done this and could enjoy it to see the final result, finally, on the canvas.

Have you been glad to lend your voice this small adventurer for Arthur and the Minimoys – the Rückker of the bad M. the second time?

Clear, I was properly excited again. Synhcronisation is for me still something new, for a long time there I am not so experienced as while singing. And when I have seen the film, then, I have felt properly at home. By the first part I have a right relation to Arthur and had immediately again desire to speak him once again. Far that is a piece anyhow also my film – and I feel nearly a kind of responsibility for Arthur.

Did you have before a notion, how would the action go on in the second part?

No, I was totally curious, above all like it goes on with Arthur and Selenia. Then the end of the film has also surprised me really totally, one sees this not coming at all. So or so the audience will do anyway a few quite new experiences with Arthur.

Would you say then that Arthur has changed?

He has been adult anyway a little bit, not least by all experiences which he has collected in the first film. For the fact that he is still so young he has experienced already quite a lot many crass things. This has made him surely more ripe. In addition, he has also taken over a big responsibility, while he has saved the Minimoys in the first part. He takes seriously this very much, in the end, the Minimoys lie to him incredibly with the heart. And above all he would like to protect of course Selenia, because, in the end, in that he is in love.

Do you have a favorite scene in the new film?

One of my dearest scenes is anyway when Arthur and Selenia kiss each other for the first time. Arthur comes later with the Minimoys in than expects and Selenia was quite really sad. He is afraid that it is disappointed and gets an absolutely wrong picture of him. Besides, he was all the time in thoughts with her and has been worried. When they kiss each other then, finally, this is a really intensive scene – and one really notices how falls in love the both are. Tokio Hotel Love

Do you run, actually, differently through the grass since you know that there the Minimoys live?

Well, I am not real anyway thus the physical freak. But this is not so bad in this case also at all, in the end, I must never do to myself in this manner the reproach that I maybe injure the Minimoys. So, my tip to everything: Comes to the cities and leaves the Minimoys in the wood and the meadows in peace!

The world of these small beings is totally foreign to you?

Anyhow already. But, nevertheless, one gets by the films suddenly desire to experience all these things also sometimes and to be even a Minimoy. All at once one has to sleep desire also sometimes in a flower or to fly with a ladybird by the area. Such scenes do Arthur’s adventure a real experience.

Intro.de Interview and cool art

October 30, 2009

Tom has also featured this on his blog. This is the cover of Intro.de with an interview with the Kaulitz twins inside. It’s really cool artwork and cries of “I want this as a poster on my wall” are being heard around the world.

Tom’s blog

If you need some spooky stuff for Halloween you should get the latest issue of German mag INTRO [or join Gustav for a ride in his car!]. The theme is perfect for this time of year – it’s all about ghosts, monsters and scary stories. The cover turned out really great! It was done by someone who specializes in creating old school comics as well as old & cool looking movie posters. For Christmas I’ll give this cover as a giant poster to Bill as my present….so he can hang it up beside his bed, next to all the other pics of me that are covering the walls in his room ;-]

You can download a PDF file of this by right clicking this link!

The interview – Translation by Pat
Twins are a challenge. Because they are so equal, there is the chance of mixing them up. For years, the double identity of Tokio Hotel inspires and polarizes. Kerstin and Sandra Grether, The Intro’s own twinpower, met the two in Hamburg to discuss the phenomenon, the music and everything else.

“Lots of people have an image of us and react automatically, most of all in daily encounters.” (Bill Kaulitz)

What would aliens say, sent from a nosy planet to Earth, to describe the phenomenon Tokio Hotel? It would be quite possible that they would find lots of beautiful things on the first two albums of the most loved and hated band in Germany. Since Nena’s epic early work, there has not been a German-speaking band that succeeded to produce such everyday, rebellious fantasy rock for a young and mostly female target group. Moreover, an original mix of styles, which is more aesthetically demanding then functional.

What it feels like for a girl, boy.

Above all, the aliens would be astounded that a leather jacket, eyeliner, and long-haired dreadlock-wearing pop singer can move heaven and earth, and polarize, just because it pleases him to also show his feminine side. The aliens would possibly remember the start of that which we call pop culture. The decade after the Second World War, when the Americans invented the word “teenager” as a marketing term and the press was making fun of the mass hysteria Frank Sinatra created because he was not wearing a uniform and was not traditionally masculine.

The “Crush with eyeliner” already has credibility with the male audience and it does not even cause a stir anymore in the artificial Anglo-American galaxies of pop. Even so, Tokio Hotel takes a courageous ride through the monsun of German-authenticity hell.

The blood will freeze in the body and mechanical soul of our aliens. Imagine. Two iridescent, cool mythical beings from an East German small town schoolyard, 2005, in the aggro wonderland where bullying is tolerated (translator note: can’t really translate this sentence, god german can be tough sometimes – Pat), while all the adults stand around, talking about being authentic and rational, to overplay their own madness. And what can a 15 year old girl, (who has grown up with internet pornography and female-unfriendly rap songs in the charts, in a time, in which “whore” is just another word for girl/female/woman), wish for besides these romantic, guitar riffing, sexy scream of self, in which Tokio Hotel wrote their experiences about the everyday varieties on the provincial schoolgrounds into their songs?

Yes, Individuality ranks highly in the Tokio Hotel Universe. It is that, which made the differently-styled twins reinvent the teeny band format. Is that what interests the (mostly female) fans the most?

How do you do that, going your own way?

Man could have known by looking at the polarising power the 4 emo boys have, the fans of Tokio Hotel are not just screaming idiots. When you click through the fan forums, you very rapidly see that they can reflect on the band with humor and critic. Which does not stop the scornful, homophobic and shocking voices in public, from telling the girls that they have fallen into a gigantic scam. The rebelling against these idiotic, sexually envious, male anti-pop reflex is a known part in the fan code. And it sharpens all the senses for a independent and creative being. (and a sixth sense for anticipating fear as well)

But the way Rock’ n Roll dies a thousand deaths, it also starts a thousand beginnings. It is no coincidence that Tokio Hotel quote Frank Sinatra’s my way evergreen in the happy science fiction hymn : “The Dark side of the Sun”, while they are tracing their own glorious road : “Hello, the end is near, hello, we’re still standing here. The future’s just begun, on the dark side of the sun”.

Humanoid

Humanoid, at the most humanlike, is the name of the 3rd album, on which the band takes a risk and changes their known TH sound in a grown up and playful way. It includes many perfect pop songs in goth rock style.

Pretty and sick, complex and to sing along to, without meaning and full of meaning, and that all at the same time. Of course there is an influence of renowned international songwriters like Guy Chambers (Robbie Williams), Desmond Child and the Matrix, with whom Tokio Hotel and their song writer team collaborated on a few songs. The guitardriven hit “Automatisch”, with electro beats and highflying singing against the machine values and celebrating being out of love as in a trance. And the already mentioned glam rock manifest: “Dark Side of the sun”, which refers to the novel by Terry Pratchett, tops even the classics of glam rock, with the huge crazy panic scenario, that was designed into it, this neat and crazy Tokio Riot, is already going on. “On the TV, in Your place, on the radio, oh. it’s a riot, it’s a riot, they say no, oh.” The Radio Hysteria song goes over all capabilities of the so called perfect pop song, to take the extraordinary out of the normalities. And it is a worthy answer in the stylish conservative rock era, that searches and curses their superstars, and can not do anything else but either love or hate them for their individuality.

It is a combination of spontaneity and strategy, and the high degree of selfmade stylising, that turn Bill and Tom Kaulitz into worldwide superstars in the boulevardised pop stables. The ideal of this decade is to channel extreme emotions in a creative way, to have a voice that counts. Bill Kaulitz’s voice and his notoriously touching looks are not anything like the idle coldness and the warpaint worn by David Bowie or Him singer Ville Vallo. He shocks and inspires with humor and cordiality. And makes fans all over the world crave for Bill and Tom’s media presence on lots of documents on the internet. Especially twins have been used historically as a strong projection of the desires of society. The world around them sees something special in them, threats them as outsiders because of that and at the same time fights the symptomes of this special state.

Twin Towers

Man, we are already really excited for the interview, we do not meet identical extravagant twins every day, who come from a town at the end of the world, coffee addicted and sunshy. And who exist to keep a distance.

Then all of a sudden Tom and Bill show up, really looking like very big dark angels (1.90m) dressed in lots of black, with striking white contrasts. Which mimics with their changing between light and dark songs. The boys come across as very neat, make jokes and are a bit nervous on this early interview day. They radiate with energy, so that a lifely conversation develops really fast. Drummer Gustav and bass player Georg are not there, too bad, it is a twin meeting after all.

What does Humanoid mean to you?

Bill: The song has a lot of different melodies and influences. And that is exactly what Humanoid means to us, a feeling of being torn up, not knowing where you belong. We have freed ourselves of the typical song structures and build the song like a story, with highs and lows.

How did you come up with the new sound anyways?

Tom: We wanted to try a few things. We had the best technichal possibilities for it. Our goal was to have cool songs and get something completely new soundwise.
Bill: It was a lot of detail work. We didn’t sleep the last few days and just kept changing it. Tom and I have also co-produced the album.

How should we imagine your songwriting process?

Tom: In the past 90 percent of our songs were created with the acoustic guitar, and then in the studio we figured out how to make them work. This time, we were directly composing and recording in the studio.
Bill: Our producers for instance played something to us and said, so and so in that direction. Then Tom had played guitar to it, and I sung to it, the songs were created in different ways.

The song Automatic sounds like you wanted to return the projections, that a lot of people have about stars or your band. That you were created, and function like a machine and so on.

Bill: Super that somebody recognizes that. That is what we meant with the song. A lot of people have an image of us and react completely automatic. Especially in meetings, that happen automatically during the day. You cannot get people to be genuine enough when you meet them.

Tokio Hotel must meet the requirements of an internationally succesful act. Your view as a popband is obvious.

Bill: Clothes, lyrics, music. It all goes together for me. It is a feeling you want to transport. I love taking pictures and I am very much into the entire fashion thing. This way you can make a lot of small dreams come true.

[to Bill] We had the theory that you went in Tom’s hairstyle direction, because he did not want to take yours.

Tom: [laughs] Let’s say, I have been a rolemodel for Bill my entire life.
Bill: When I decided to get the dreadlocks, I did not even think about his, cause I thought his were horrible. They were kind of nature things. And I wanted something completely different.

Did you guys have a phase in your lives in which you did not stand out at all?

Bill: When you were out on your own, it was not such a big theme. But when you show up together, people talk about you. Even though we look so different.
Tom: That was already like that in the past.
Bill: There is nothing more beautiful then being an identical twin. I cannot even imagine it being any different. Tom and I, we are so much one, we are soulmates. I can not be without him for even one day.

Next to all the enthusiasm, that comes with that, there must be people who are afraid of this strong unity.

Tom: That has happened to us a lot, naturally. In the seventh grade we were punished exactly because of this. The teachers said, our opinion was to strong for them.
Bill: [laughs] When Tom and I share an opinion, you cannot get passed that. That is pretty hard/rough. Also for the people on our team.

Your twinly togetherness is probably not standard in society?

Bill: Yeah, it is something different.
Tom: All people always thought, it is crazy that these types, who dress so differently, talk to each other at all.
Bill: Like the motto: why is someone, who obviously listens to hiphop, hanging out with a dude, who paints his eyes.

You are living in the vision of a really tolerant society. Because it is nice that a hiphop type guy and such a feminine type understand each other so well.

Bill: Yeah, to be understood, ja, right!
Tom: I think, people can supplement each other, when they would do more together. People compliment each other really well , thank god, while everyone has a different opinion.

Really shocking , that your teachers dissed you. They should have saved you from being bullied.

Bill: Yeah, exactly, instead the teacher, when we got punished, told the students, they should put Tom in a new class.
Tom: We found that out recently. My best friend was in that class, and he told me.
Bill: We never allowed it though.
Tom: We have always polarised. That was a good preparation for now. We love our fans for this courage. And it is great that it inspires girls to get creative themselves.
Bill: Everywhere we go, they give us their lyrics and demo’s and drawings. That is really cool.

The Aliens transmit to their planet: Once Tokio Hotel confused the schoolgrounds. Humanoid could convince the adult doubters, who only saw blank posterboys in a group/band. Tokio Hotel are too good to just be a “Guilty pleasure”. One of the last truths that can still be twisted about in this era.

See it online as well.

Star Online – Malaysia

This must be Tokio Hotel in Asia day! We missed the announcement, but this is such fun! So so SO many fans in Asia! *waves*

Tokio love – By MELODY L. GOH

Germany’s latest export, Tokio Hotel, is taking the world by storm.

THEY’RE currently the most popular German band to hit the international music scene, and they’re about to get bigger.

Formed in 2001 in a town called Magdeburg in Germany, pop rock band Tokio Hotel has been dominating the European music television channels for a little more than two years now with their vividly striking video clips and charged-up tunes. In Germany, teenagers walk the city streets all dressed up like Bill Kaulitz, the band’s lead singer.

“It’s crazy! But it is also like a dream come true for us. I think every band dreams of having people imitate them, it’s a form of flattery,” said Bill in a phone interview from Los Angeles, where Tokio Hotel was promoting its latest album, Humanoid. The band, which was called Devillish in its early years, also includes Kaulitz’s guitarist twin brother Tom, drummer Gustav Schafer and bassist Georg Listing.

“When we got our recording contract, we had to think of another name. We like to travel, and we love Tokyo. The one thing that you will always go to when you travel is a hotel, so we decided to call ourself Tokio Hotel. The funny thing is, we have never been to Tokyo but we do hope to go there soon,” explained Bill of the name change.

“After this I think we’ll be going back to Germany, then to Paris, and then later return to the United States and South America, as well as to Canada,” he added, relating the band’s busy schedule. Earlier, the band had played in Athens, Greece, as part of the MTV Day 2009 celebrations (the gig will be shown under the MTV World Stage banner on the MTV channel).

On Nov 5, Tokio Hotel will perform at the 2009 MTV Europe Music Awards in Berlin, Germany. Among the other stars on the list are Katy Perry, who will be hosting the programme, Foo Fighters, Leona Lewis, Shakira and Green Day.

“We’re so excited about that! We’ll be playing with such big names like Foo Fighters and Green Day – these are bands we grew up listening to. It will be a totally amazing experience,” said Bill, who sounded genuinely giddy with excitement over the prospect of playing with childhood heroes.

Tokio Hotel is no stranger to MTV awards. In the 2007 Europe MTV Awards the band received the best international act honour, while a year later, it won best new artiste in the MTV Music Awards, as well as several accolades at the MTV Latin America Awards. However, Tom insists that winning awards is the last thing on the band members’ minds when it comes to their music.

“It’s mostly about the lyrics and how to reach our fans through music. But the awards that we get show us that we are appreciated, so that’s very special, too,” explained Tom.

For Humanoid, the band’s second English album (the first was the international hit Scream), Tokio Hotel worked with producer David Jost for about a year, co-producing some of the tracks.

Said Bill: “We have German and English versions of the album, but right now we are focusing on promoting the English version. We write our songs in German because that is our mother tongue and it is much easier for us to think and express ourselves in the language. But we want people all over the world to enjoy our music so we translated the songs into English.”

Having been together for some time now, the band members are aware of each other’s personalities and traits, so travelling around the globe for weeks (and sometimes, months) is not much of a problem, although the twins do admit to having arguments every now and then.

“It’s normal for people to fight, especially for brothers like us! But everyone knows their boundaries and we each try not to make things difficult for everyone else. If we do argue, we’ll usually forget about it after like, five minutes,” said Bill.

Well, with their star rising at mega speed at the moment, Tokio Hotel really does not have much to argue or complain about, anyway.

As Tom concluded: “We do love the attention and the success, and we appreciate every minute of it.”

> The MTV World Stage will be screened today at 10pm on Astro’s MTV Channel 713, with repeats tomorrow (8pm) and Sunday (10pm). The 2009 MTV Europe Music Awards will be shown on Nov 6 (8am and 7pm), with a repeat on Nov 7 (noon).

Showcase in Paris

October 29, 2009

With mad love to Cara_luv who tweeted from the event yesterday and now has provided this amazing translation and review of the event yesterday. The adoration and passion from the French fans for Tokio Hotel is amazing. Love this last line:

And that leads to a certitude : Tokio Hotel phenomenon is not history, it’s always here and now.

Showcase in Paris or the french madness…

German band Tokio Hotel was giving a private show yesterday evening under the Alexandre III bridge in a place called The Showcase and, once again, fans had a lot of troubles to hide their enthousiasm. Bill, Tom, Georg and Gustav actually only played three songs after their 3D show. A short appearance like scheduled, for the opening of Saturne Domus, that has left many wanting more.

Tokio Hotel is still a phenomenon really hard to control and this private show has for sure convinced all of those who weren’t believing in it. The 3D show, with the band in holograms, was scheduled at 9pm and then at 9.30pm the boys in real were to come. But a lot of fans were there since the morning or even since the day before. The German guys had already caused quite a stir last time they came for promotion in September or October in order to promote Humanoid : but this time they basically brought hysteria all on their way.

Inside of this really beautiful place, all in stone with arcades and all, the 3D show started and with it : yellings, tears, pushings. Yes, for 3D ! A technology that is by the way really amazing with Bill Kaulitz all in white, looking like real despite the fact he got his old dreadlocks look. So the first title is played, Dark side of the sun, and then in the middle of the next the show has to stop. Yeah the venue is gorgeous but obviously too small to handle hundreds of hysterical fans, all standing in front of a stage not high enough. So it’s the chaos, with everybody pushing and young girls in front row are stuck in the bariers. Fearing the accident, the guys in charge, even if security was there and all, put the light on and try to calm everybody down. They ask them to go back but of course no one follows. So that’s when you understand that with the real Tokio Hotel guys coming soon, that could totally end in a nightmare. But the music starts again and here we go for Zoom, World behind my wall and the single, in german, Automatisch. Fans know it by heart and sing. They sing more than they can actually see. And here’s the issue of this evening : the first half of the venue was the only one able to see something… The other half has only seen a head or an arm from time to time…

An insatisfaction not too serious for 3D show but that has caused an other chaos when they boys came. Because yes after a pause to prepare the stage and try again to calm the people, Tokio Hotel really came. Lead by Bill with his now famous mowhawk, the band chose to play old songs like Ubers Ende der Welt and Schwartz. Boys are really good, acoustic sound is gorgeous : Tokio Hotel live never disappoints. The fans, girls mostly, are out of control, jumping everywhere like mad. So when Bill announces the last song the venue is suddenly on shock. Used to a lot of calls back they don’t wanna believe it. So everybody starts to sing on Automatisch : awesome vibe with this time a real good moment shared with the band.

It’s already 10.30pm and after a whole hour of madness, we finally feel like in a real and normal show. Too bad, it’s already the end… Tokio Hotel was supposed to play 3 to 4 songs and finally played only 3. Really late in the schedule and with all those nerves crisis in the crowd… But Bill and co are real generous people and we also witnessed how much they were happy to see that in France passion was still there. So some fans had the nice suprise to get a quick signing session with the band. Just the time to notice the change of hair color of Gustav who seems to have decided to go back to blond. Some fans will tell that it has saved their evening. The others hesitate between the joy of having listen to the boys, the disappointment of the only 3 songs played and some are disgusted of the way the whole evening went. Some say they wish they hadn’t come…

We kinda want to answer them that it’s not the band’s fault. Wanting to please the band and the fans, organization has let a lot of people without tickets enter and didn’t have realized what kind of reactions Tokio Hotel was bringing from fans totally unable to keep their cool. Fans didn’t give themselves a present by behaving like this because it may be harder in the future to convince people to set that kind of private event again.

Tokio Hotel will be on tour in France in march during their big european tour, but no more in small venues, only in Zenith and a Bercy. They can’t do less anymore. And that leads to a certitude : Tokio Hotel phenomenon is not history, it’s always here and now.

Tokio Hotel Offer Some Tips For Dressing Like Them On Halloween
Bill Kaulitz says fans just need a Mohawk, some makeup and ‘a leather jacket.’

Halloween is almost upon us, and there are several celebrities out there who would be perfect inspirations for your Halloween costume. Sure, you can dress like Bella and Edward from “Twilight,” or you could even dress like Lady Gaga (more on that Friday). But how about teen-favorite rockers Tokio Hotel?

We caught up with TH’s Tom and Bill Kaulitz to get their ideas for stepping into their shoes Saturday night. Bill said he has an easy look to copy, despite his glam exterior. All you need is a Mohawk, some makeup and fingerless gloves. “I think that’s the easiest,” he said of fans trying to emulate his look, adding that they’ll also need “a leather jacket.”

His brother, Tom, had some advice for aspiring Bills, making his brother laugh as he jokingly suggested: “Makeup, ugly face, ugly smile.”

During an interview with the rockers last October, we surprised them with some Halloween candy after hearing that they were big fans of American sweets. “In Germany, we do not have Halloween, which is a shame. We do have some of this candy though,” Bill laughed at the time, surveying the mounds of sweets before him. “We have M&Ms, we have these things here — Ritter Sport — and these too, [Kinder Surprise Eggs]. … I’m not really into chocolate; I really love all the sour stuff. … I just like the surprises [in the Kinder].”
