You can just as well get used to it: German is becoming cool. Become “sharp” at German with Bill and Tom from Tokio Hotel.

You’ll think it’s a lie. Here’s sitting 4 young men on 17-18 years and say that they make German Rock music which people actually listen to. Even in countries as France (who usually HADES Germany) has people gone crazy and sing along to songs like Rette mich, Durch den Monsun and Leb die Sekunde. Denmark is terrible behind so I’m going to Hamburg so Tokio Hotel can help me become “cool” at German. (= good at German)

“Sehr uncool”

-“spitze” you really don’t say that. You really can’t say that! Tom says laughing. Tom is guitarist and twin brother to Bill, who is lead singer. They keep interfering one another. Some times drummer Gustav and bassplayer Georg meddles in the conversation.

- “there exist a lot of really bad German words” Bill admits.

-why do you sing in German then?

Because it’s our language! Bill talks fast and loud, but Tom interrupts:

-“it’s always been “sehr uncool” to sing in German. So it’s actually become a goal for us to write good German lyrics.” Bill continues.

-“and when I started writing songs I couldn’t speak any English at all. Leb die Sekunde, for instance, I wrote when i were 9 years old.

-And it’s on the record?

-“yeah! But it’s been changed a lot of times. There’s about, perhaps, 20 versions now.” Bill explains with his hands, his nails are painted white and black.

-“We definitely hadn’t considered that people outside Germany would like our music, but apparently they did” say’s Bill and the rest nods.

German in the cool way.

-“Could you teach me some German words there’s cool to say so we can ride the German wave?

Well… also… ja, klar aber…

For the first time is Tokio Hotel completely quiet. They’re thinking. Suddenly Gustav says:

-“sexy”!

That’s English!

-“no no, we say that a lot. ”du bist sexy” means that you’re hot.”

Yeah, I know that.

-“ok. ”tierisch” ! That’s the coolest word! Bill claps his hands.

-“it’s only you who says that” Toms says sceptically.

-Was, you say it all the time too.

They agree that tierisch is cool to say. It means bestially in Danish.

The guys think so loud you can hear it.

-“GEIL” Tom suddenly yells. It’s super old school but it’s still cool to say. Everybody laughs.

-“And it’s fun to say all 3 things at the same time” Bill underlines. “It’s a tierisch, sexy, Geil shirt you have on.

When we’re done laughing the guys make a top 3 of very bad German words (see at the bottom)

-“people that say these things are SO sad (sad is a bad word but the Danish word that where used can’t be translated because it’s slang and can’t find the English slang which would cover it), Tom laughs.

I thank Tokio Hotel for everything and feel that I rock at German. Now it’s your turn. Read and learn. And listen in your German lessons.

German Words you under NO circumstances are allowed to say:
Flott it means fast, but is used as cool.
Fetzig it means cool, wild.
Ulkig it means funny, weird, strange

German Words you absolutely should use:
Tierisch it means bestially, but is used as fantastic, wild, cool
Sexy it means sexy and is actually a. English word. (But Bill insists that you can say it if you want to be cool in Germany)
Geil it means horny but is used as cool or wild

When Tokio Hotel, the boy group from Magdeburg, appeared on the cover of Bravo teen magazine in summer 2005 – and practically every week after that – singer Bill Kaulitz and his twin brother Tom, the group’s guitarist, were just 15. Base player Georg and drummer Gustav were bearlike boys of 17 and 18, who covered their bulky shoulders with fan t-shirts of heavy bands. Bill and Tom, however, wore their polished subcultural outfits with a breathtakingly childish air – Bill’s voice hadn’t even broken, and smaller shoulders have never graced a leather jacket.

Berlin (RP). Tokio Hotel veröffentlichen am Freitag ihr zweites Album “Zimmer 483″. Im März gehen die vier jungen Rockmusiker aus Magdeburg auf große Europa-Tournee. Keine andere deutsche Band hat derzeit vergleichbaren Erfolg. Mit der neuen Platte wollen sie noch viel weiter kommen.

“Übers Ende der Welt” und vielleicht sogar darüber hinaus. Der Titel der ersten Nummer-eins-Single aus dem neuen Tokio- Hotel-Album “Zimmer 483″ könnte als Messlatte verstanden werden. Für die vier Jungs gilt es, mit der neuen Platte an das Debüt “Schrei” anzuknüpfen, um als ernstzunehmende Rockband anerkannt zu werden.

Wie hoch ist der Erfolgsdruck?

Bill Kaulitz: Wir haben uns von vornherein keinen Druck gemacht und sind entspannt an die Sache rangegangen. Da wurde ganz bewusst kein festes Veröffentlichungsdatum festgelegt, sondern wir wollten das Album erst fertig produzieren, bis alle damit glücklich sind.

Das Album heißt nun “Zimmer 483″. Wofür steht die Zahl?

Bill: Das ist die Nummer einer Finka in Spanien, wo wir uns letztes Jahr hin zurückgezogen haben, um Urlaub zu machen und neue Songs zu schreiben.

Tom: Letztendlich war es aber nur Song schreiben.

Georg: Als wir wiederkamen, haben uns alle gefragt, warum wir nicht braun sind.Musikalisch klingt das Album insgesamt rockiger und härter. Die Lieder sind sehr gitarrenlastig. Irgendwie sind sie düster und melancholisch, die Texte wirken pessimisstisch.

Bill: Der Eindruck entsteht schnell. Aber beim zweiten Hören merkt man, dass da eine positive Message drin steckt. Zum Beispiel “Über das Ende hinaus” erzählt davon, was wir in den letzten Jahren für eine geile Zeit hatten, und wir wollen andere motivieren, auch Spaß zu haben.

Tom: Der Song soll Mut machen. Dass es eher düster klingt, liegt auch daran, dass Bills Stimme tiefer geworden ist im Vergleich zum ersten Album.

Über welche Themen singt ihr, und wem wollt ihr Mut machen?

Das ist so gut an Tokio Hotel!
Bill: Dadurch, dass es uns so gut geht, ist uns bewusst geworden, dass es viele Menschen gibt, bei denen das nicht der Fall ist. Zum Beispiel bekamen wir Post, in der uns Fans ihr Leid klagten. Dass sich deren Eltern scheiden lassen oder so. Die uns aber auch sagen, dass unsere Songs denen helfen, darüber hinwegzukommen.

Was ist das Nervigste am Erfolg?

Bill: Paparrazzi. Nervt extrem.

Tom: Wir können nicht mehr normal zum Bäcker gehen.

Wie viel Zeit bleibt noch für euch selbst?

Bill: Sehr wenig. Aber wenn jemand mal nicht mehr kann und eine Pause braucht, ist das kein Problem. Dann fahren wir halt mal ein paar Tage nach Hause. Wir haben alle keine Lust, irgendwann keine Kraft mehr zu haben.

Kraft braucht man auch für den Schulabschluss. Georg und Gustav haben einen. Bill und Tom, wie geht es bei euch voran?

Tom: Ganz schön schleppend. Schule ist ja an sich schon ein Vollzeit-Job. Und die Musik um so mehr.

Bill: Da bleibt kaum Zeit.

Georg: Ich bewundere Bill und Tom, dass sie sich abends noch hinsetzen und was für die Schule machen.

Wie funktioniert Schule, wenn ihr immer untwergs seid?

Bill: Das ist wie so ein Fernstudium. Wir bekommen Aufgaben per Post zugeschickt oder via Internet. Die müssen wir lösen und dann zurückschicken.

Ihr habt also Hoffnung, den Schulabschluss nebenbei zu schaffen?

Bill: Ja. Man hat keine Garantie, dass das mit der Musik ewig so weiter geht. Da ist es gut, wenn man auf was zurückgreifen kann.

Bill und Tom, gern werdet ihr als absolut gegensätzliche Zwillinge dargestellt. Seid Ihr wirklich so unterschiedlich?

Bill: Wir haben wohl mehr gemeinsam als uns unterscheidet.

Tom: Unsere Gedanken und Träume sind oft die gleichen. Vom Charakter her sind wir uns sehr ähnlich.

Äußerlich ganz und gar nicht. Was unterscheidet Euch?

Tom: Wir haben einen völlig unterschiedlichen Musikgeschmack. Ich mag eher HipHop. Bill steht auf Rockmusik. Wir haben auch nicht den gleich Mädchengeschmack.

Bill: Ach. Die waren vom Typ her oft sehr ähnlich.

Tom: Aber da gab es nie Streit. Bill war auch nie sauer, wenn ich das Mädel dann gekriegt habe.

Was macht euch so erfolgreich?

Bill: Ich glaube, dass liegt an unserem Alter. Wir sind genauso alt wie unsere Fans.

Erfolg macht Neider und schafft Spott. Wie geht Ihr mit Kritik um?

Bill: Die Band gibt es seit sieben Jahren. Schon damals, als wir noch unter dem Namen “Devilish” in kleinen Clubs gespielt haben, fanden uns die Leute entweder gut oder schlecht. Wir sind halt wie wir sind. Vor kurzem waren wir auf dem Titel eines Satire-Magazins. Das fanden wir sogar cool. Schafft nicht jeder.

Wie sieht ein Tag im Leben von Tokio Hotel aus?

Bill: Heute ging es um 8.30 Uhr los. Das ist für uns furchtbar. Wir sind absolute Langschläfer. Dann geht es den ganzen Tag rund. Auftritte, Interviews, viel Fliegen, lange Autofahrten. Manchmal sind wir an einem Tag in drei Städten.

Im März geht es für Euch auf eine große Europa-Tournee. Eure Popularität wächst ständig. Wo soll es noch hingehen?

Tom: Wir werden sicherlich noch mehr ins Ausland gehen. Erstmal zählt es aber, die Tour erfolgreich über die Bühne zu bringen.

Wo bleibt die Zeit, Bill, jeden Tag deine Firsur herzurichten? Dauert das lange?

Georg: Sieht auf jeden Fall nicht so aus, als ob er lange braucht.

Bill: Etwas über eine halbe Stunde.

Georg: Da brauche ich auf jeden Fall länger im Bad.

Tokio Hotel on the Eurocharts

The Eurochart`s highest new entry of the week, at No. 7, was “Ubers Ende Der Welt” (Universal Island) by German rock band Tokio Hotel. It was new at No. 1 in Germany and Austria and No. 2 in Switzerland, as the lead track from the group`s second album “Zimmer 483,” which was released Feb. 23 as the follow-up to the successful 2005 debut “Schrei.”
